Job summary

Washington University in St. Louis is seeking a detail-oriented scheduler and billing assistant to obtain insurance information, counsel on financial assistance, and register patients by phone or email.

You will coordinate with physicians and clinical staff to schedule urgent or referred cases, explain billing processes, and provide excellent patient service in a busy office environment. Required are a high school diploma or equivalent and about 3 years of relevant experience.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Relevant experience (3 years) in a related role preferred.
  • Familiarity with billing processes and scheduling workflows.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with collecting demographics and insurance information for scheduling.
  • Coordinate with physicians and staff to schedule urgent or referred patients.
  • Explain billing processes to patients and staff; respond to inquiries.
  • Support reminders and scheduling using Relatient or similar systems.
  • Update provider scheduling templates based on physician input.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Position Summary

Obtains insurance information and referral forms and counsels patients on financial assistance over the phone. Schedules and registers patients over the phone or by email, with no patient contact.

Primary Duties & Responsibilities
  • Obtains insurance information from patients and counsels alternative ways for financial assistance.
  • Communicates with physicians and clinical staff to assist with scheduling urgent or referred patient scheduling calls/requests.
  • Provides patient scheduling services to include collecting demographics and insurance registration.
  • Reviews schedule for new patients and makes updates when necessary.
  • Calls patients with appointment time reminders; obtains insurance information and referral forms. Processes internal physician referrals for clinical care.
  • Explains billing process to patients, answers incoming inquiries from patients and third-party payers. Works with others to solve moderately complex problems.
  • Explains billing process to other staff; assists with basic account maintenance activities.
  • Assists patients with insurance questions regarding the billing process.
  • Assists staff with sending out reminder cards and other scheduling duties. Works Relatient patient reminder system results and contacts patients or makes scheduling changes.
  • May make daily edits and temporary changes to provider scheduling templates based on physician input.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Salary Range

$17.87 - $27.06 / Hourly

The salary range reflects base salaries paid for positions in a given job grade across the University. Individual rates within the range will be determined by factors including one's qualifications and performance, equity with others in the department, market rates for positions within the same grade and department budget.
