Job summary

The Mount Sinai Health System is seeking a physician coder to handle office, outpatient, and inpatient coding, ensuring accurate capture of revenue. You will educate staff on documentation requirements to improve coding quality and completeness.

You will validate coding levels by reviewing clinical notes, collaborate with clinical teams, and help implement documentation and revenue enhancement opportunities while minimizing denials.

Qualifications

• Associate degree required; CPC certification preferred.
• 5–10 years related experience in physician coding.
• CPC Certification required or equivalent credential.

Responsible for office, out-patient, and inpatient physician coding. Provides education regarding documentation requirements for improved quality of coding and to ensure accurate and complete capture of revenue.

Responsibilities

1. Perform specialty coding for services and medical office visits.
2. Validate and determine appropriate coding levels by obtaining and reviewing clinical documentation.
3. Compare and review charge tickets, both manually and system generated, to clinical documentation to ensure that all charges for procedures and pharmacy items have been accurately documented and captured.
4. Ensure that documentation supports charges to prevent denials/underpayments.
5. Follow up on missing charge tickets and clinical documentation as appropriate.
6. Assist with implementation of documentation and revenue enhancement opportunities.
7. Collaborate with clinical staff to identify and implement appropriate documentation and coding modifications.
8. Review and distribute coding related information to clinical staff, including CPT and ICD-10 code changes, medical necessity policies, coding/billing information regarding new procedures and pharmacy items.
9. In conjunction with Sr. Billing Analyst, identify relevant charge master or fee updates.
10. Responsible for resolving any coding related errors and denials that are identified by Hospital or Practice billing system as part of the revenue enhancement initiatives.
11. Consult and provide feedback with frontline clinical staff and financial coordinators to identify reimbursable indications for treatment.
12. Assist on reviews of revenue cycle with management and supervisor.

The Mount Sinai Health System provides salary ranges that comply with applicable laws. The salary range for the role is $58,661 - $81,675 annually. Actual salaries depend on a variety of factors, including experience, education, and operational need. This range does not include bonuses or other forms of compensation or benefits.
