Job Description

Class Title: Teacher

Characteristics of the Class: Under the supervision of the school principal, responsible for the instruction, progress, and discipline of all pupils in assigned classes, and performs related duties as required.

Essential Functions
  • Responsible for instructional planning, including providing written lesson plans and preparation aligned with instructional objectives.
  • Establish positive learning expectations and evaluate pupils' progress, maintaining accurate records of achievements.
  • Implement instructional methods, applying contemporary learning theories and teaching techniques, utilizing available instructional materials, and participating in developing new teaching strategies.
  • Create bulletin boards and interest areas reflecting pupils' current work.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of curriculum content and instructional level.
  • Participate in programs to improve student attendance and promote anti-vandalism initiatives.
  • Establish and maintain reasonable rules of conduct within the classroom and on school grounds, including playgrounds, corridors, and lunchrooms, in accordance with the Chicago Public Schools' Uniform Discipline Code.
  • Maintain accurate attendance records and seating charts.
  • Encourage student growth in self-discipline and positive self-concept.
  • Ensure fairness in teacher-pupil relationships and show understanding and respect for students.
  • Initiate conferences with parents, guardians, and staff regarding student progress, attendance, and conduct.
  • Communicate with parents and counsel pupils as needed.
  • Participate in staff meetings, in-service training, and utilize provided resources.
  • May coordinate and attend class field trips and work in extracurricular and after-school activities.
  • Utilize community resources to support educational activities.
Minimum Qualifications

Education and Experience: Successful completion of all student teaching requirements and coursework for Illinois State Board of Education teaching certification.

License Requirements

Possession of at least one valid Illinois State Board of Education teaching license: Professional Educator License (PEL) or Educator License with Stipulations (ELS), properly endorsed for this position.
