Job summary

GEO Reentry Services LLC in Pennsylvania is seeking a Counselor to develop, organize and deliver education programs on drug and alcohol abuse. The role supports rehabilitation and community reintegration for participants, guided by the What Works framework and coordinated with case managers.

The position requires relevant education or PCB certification, 2 years of counseling experience, and strong collaboration skills for group and individual sessions.

Qualifications

  • Two years of counseling experience directly with clients in social work or criminal justice settings, plus a relevant bachelor’s degree or equivalent.
  • Or one year paraprofessional plus PCB certification as Addiction Counselor.
  • Or one year experience with a Master’s degree in addictions, psychology, or social work.
  • Alternative: 18 behavioral science credits plus related experience in criminal justice.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinate substance abuse program using the What Works system; schedule intakes and sessions.
  • Facilitate psycho-educational groups and document attendance and progress.
  • Create individual treatment plans and maintain progress notes in charts and DOC database.
  • Deliver standardized programs including intervention or violence prevention groups.
  • Maintain accurate documentation and update logs and charts promptly.
  • Identify barriers to treatment completion and guide clients to overcome them.
  • Communicate client progress to participants and supervisors regularly.
  • Maintain knowledge of new developments in substance abuse treatment.
  • Collaborate with DOC professionals and related programs.

Responsibilities
  • Coordinates substance abuse program using principles of the "What Works" system. Schedules intakes, and group and individual sessions. Discusses specific cases with case managers to determine if they are appropriate for substance abuse treatment. May assist with the assignment of cases.
  • Facilitates psycho-educational/behavior modification groups using principles of the "What Works" system. Documents participants' attendance, participation and progress in clinical charts and the Department of Corrections (DOC) database.
  • Conducts risk/need assessments and creates individual treatment plans for each assigned participant. Meets regularly with participants and documents participants' progress or regress in clinical charts and the DOC database.
  • Delivers standardized programs that will include batter's intervention, violence prevention or other group sessions as identified or needed.
  • Maintains accurate clinical documentation including intake summaries, group notes, discharge summaries, treatment plans and updates. Updates therapeutic logs in a timely manner. Enters pertinent information into charts and DOC database.
  • Identifies problem areas that may impact participants' ability to successfully complete treatment. Guides participants to develop strategies to overcome obstacles to success completion of treatment.
  • Advises customer of participants' progress regularly or at completion of treatment.
  • Ensures that participants' records are accurately completed in a timely manner.
  • May maintain a specific substance abuse treatment case file for every program participant.
  • Uses the DOC curriculum, materials, and programs for use in the substance abuse program.
  • Maintains knowledge of new developments in the field of substance abuse.
  • Maintains a collegial relationship with other substance abuse professionals, DOC professionals, programs, and associations.
  • Participates in related training for substance abuse.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Minimum Requirements
  • Drug and Alcohol Treatment Staff, must have at a minimum the following experience and training:
    • Two (2) years of professional experience providing drug and alcohol counseling service directly to clients in a social work or criminal justice setting, and have earned a Bachelor's Degree that includes eighteen (18) credits in the behavioral science, OR
    • One (1) year of paraprofessional, and one year of professional experience providing drug and alcohol counseling services to clients in a social work or criminal justice setting and are certified by the Pennsylvania Certification Board (PCB) as a "Certified Addiction Counselor", OR
    • One (1) year of professional experience providing drug and alcohol counseling service to clients in a social work or criminal justice setting and a Master's Degree with major coursework in addictions science, psychology, or social work; OR
    • An equivalent combination of experience and training which includes eighteen (18) college credits in the behavioral science; OR A Bachelor's Degree in Psychology or Addictions profession and experience working with the criminal justice population and training in Medically Assisted Treatment (MAT).
  • Preference given to experience within a correctional setting.
  • Ability to interact in a professional manner in both individual and group counseling settings.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work with a team of professionals and have the ability to implement team strategy approaches to work assignments.
  • Ability to work with computers and the necessary software typically used by the department.

Hours: 7:45 A.M. - 3:45 P.M. Monday - Friday
