Qualifications

Saturday 7-3pm

The Role

Under general direction, the Mental Health Specialist is responsible for providing counseling and casework services to individuals with mental illnesses and/or substance abuse problems. Assesses patients’ mental status through interviews and observations and develops treatment plans or makes referrals to appropriate services.

Responsibilities

What You Will Do

  • Work with patients and their families to determine treatment goals.
  • Gather family information, observations, and concerns.
  • Interview, observe, and develop treatment plans for patients.
  • Implement goals, policies, and activities to meet program objectives.
  • Conduct individual and group therapy sessions for patients with mental illness, emotional, and substance abuse issues.
  • Assess incoming clients and help prepare them for transitioning home.
  • Provide referrals to appropriate mental health resources.
  • Monitor patients’ treatment progress and mental status.
  • Consult with other mental health professionals for effective treatment courses.
  • Provide crisis intervention services for patients in danger to themselves or others.
  • Maintain accurate records of patient information and treatment provided.
  • Utilize community mental health resources as needed.
  • Stay informed about changes in the field.
  • Perform other duties as requested.
Qualifications

Who You Will Be

  • NYSED LMSW or LMHC licensure OR other Qualified Health Professional (QHP) status, such as MSW-Limited Permit with the ability to obtain licensure within one year of hire, or MHC-Limited Permit with similar requirements.
  • Master’s Degree in Social Work or Mental Health Counseling.
  • One to Two years of clinical experience in substance use and/or mental health treatment for designated programs based on facility needs.
  • Deep knowledge of NYC’s diverse network of medical and behavioral health organizations, including substance use disorder treatments, education, employment services, and community support groups.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and Electronic Health Records (EHR).
  • Experience working with individuals from diverse racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic backgrounds.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality.
