Definition:

Under the general direction of the Principal, the Bilingual Paraeducator performs a variety of duties assisting teachers in the overall support of instructional activities for students who are enrolled in special education moderate/severe programs and/or mainstream classrooms.

Major Duties and Responsibilities:

The following is a list of duties that is representative of the position that includes but is not limited to:

• Provides direct instruction under the guidance and instruction from the classroom teacher
• Communicates with students using speech appropriate to the student’s level of understanding including but not limited to, verbal, picture/symbol systems, technology, functional signs, and entry level sign language
• Plans and prepares appropriate educational activities, equipment and materials according to lesson plans provided by teacher and ensures a safe environment for the student
• Assists in the management and housekeeping of the classroom
• Participates with a team in the implementation of behavioral and treatment plans
• Tracks student eligible medical support and input data
• Completes forms, logs and paperwork required for MediCal reporting
• Assists certificated staff in administering a variety of formal and informal assessments.
• Collects and reviews student data such as strengths, methods, strategies best used in support of goals.
• Provides specialized health care procedures and behavioral support as assigned
• Administers medication as prescribed and directed by school nurse
• Accommodates the special needs of students such as toileting and diapering
• Supervises students on and off the bus, at recess, meals, on field trips and other times as needed
• Assists in mainstreaming students and monitors medical and behavioral issues as assigned
• May ride school bus and assists with students to monitor medical and behavioral problems
• Monitors and evaluates student progress and completes records accurately
• Participates physically with students in activities as needed, including but not limited to: climbing play structures, making rapid movements to prevent injury, and pursuing students who elope
• Supervises students as directed
• Organizes room displays, bulletin boards and interest areas appropriate to the students’ goals
• Assists in providing snack and meals during school day as mandated by student educational programs
• Attends meetings as required
• Translates correspondence, forms, meeting minutes and other documents
• Interprets for students, parents, teachers and community members
• Complies with Monterey County Office of Education Board Policies, Superintendent Policies and Administrative Regulations

• Physical, mental and emotional stamina to perform the duties and responsibilities of the position

Required Qualifications:

Education and Experience:

• Education as required by the Every Student Succeeds Act of 2015: High school diploma or equivalent
• AND two (2) years of higher education study (48 semester units) OR possession of an Associate’s or higher degree OR met a rigorous standard of quality and able to demonstrate, through a formal State or local academic assessment, knowledge or and the ability to assist in instructing, reading, writing and mathematics
• Prior job-related experiences, paid or voluntary, with school-age children or children/individuals with disabilities

Knowledge of:

• Strong English and Spanish oral and written communication skills including spelling, grammar and punctuation

Licenses and Certifications:

• Possession of an appropriate valid California Driver’s License with evidence of insurability
• First Aid
• Complete approved MCOE Crisis Intervention Program within six (6) months of employment and maintains valid certification
• CPR Certification within six (6) months of employment
• Program for the Deaf/Hard of Hearing: Ability to pass the MCOE sign language test within six (6) months of employment
• Demonstrated proficiency in reading, writing and speaking Spanish by passing the MCOE Spanish Language Competency Test

Desirable Qualifications:

• Coursework in education, psychology, child development, classroom behavior management and/or Early Childhood Education
• Experience working with students with disabilities and implementing behavioral management plans for students

Available Pay Stipends:

• $150 per month incentive for Paraeducators working in the DHH program with proficiency in sign language, as certified by MCOE
• $150 per month incentive for Paraeducators with proficiency in Braille and working in a position eligible for this incentive
• $150 per month incentive for Specialized Health Care Procedures if assigned to specific students and trained by MCOE
• $500 annual training incentive to employees who are requested and volunteer to participate in training for certification and willingness to administer emergency medications/procedures as defined by contract
