Qualifications

• Completed accredited medical interpreter training, required.
• Formal interpreter training, required.
• Two years of college education, preferred.

Responsibilities

• Translates accurately and literally between languages to facilitate communication between healthcare providers and patient families, including patient-specific instructions.
• Clarifies non-literal translations and provides necessary cultural framing to prevent misunderstandings during healthcare interactions.
• Explains the role of a Medical Interpreter to patients, families, and providers to ensure smooth cooperation.
• Serves as a resource to deliver culturally competent care and to explain NCH culture and practices.
• Maintains confidentiality and upholds the Medical Interpreter Code of Ethics.
• Documents interpreter services and coordinates with other agencies for patient and family services.
• Pursues ongoing professional development and adheres to organizational policies.
