Pay Rate: $21.22 per hour

This position is full time, 7.5 hours per day (8 am - 4 pm), Monday through Friday during the school year. The position comes with paid time off and is benefit eligible.

Summary

The purpose of this position is to provide instructional support to the English Language teacher (EL) and classroom teachers. This position will assist in supporting the instruction of ELs in the classroom; and assist in bridging communication between home and school and to support the students’ understanding of their new environment by respecting dual language/dual cultural experiences.

Essential Duties And Responsibilities

The following duties are normal for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned.

  • Demonstrate competency in English and at least one other language.
  • Promote effective communication between school personnel and EL families.
  • Support academic instruction of EL students by implementing teacher-guided strategies, utilizing established classroom accommodations and documenting student progress.
  • Work collaboratively with classroom teachers in providing academic assistance to EL students. Follows support schedule as outlined.
  • Help students transition to a new school environment.
  • Make parent contacts and supplies appropriate documentation as directed by the EL teacher or principal and as outlined through district policy and procedure.
  • Understand the developmental stages of English proficiency; newcomer, silent period, experimental, social English and academic English. Assist students in understanding other cultures while respecting and encouraging the continued practice of their home language and culture.
  • Participate in appropriate training sessions, such as blood borne pathogens, medication administration, CPR, first aid, etc.

Minimum Training, Education and/or Experience Required to Perform Essential Job Functions. Must meet the following standards for this position.

  • Completed two years of study at an institution of higher education
  • Obtained an associate’s degree (or higher)
  • Be able to demonstrate through a formal assessment, the ability to assist in instructing reading, writing and mathematics.
  • Must be bilingual in English and at least one other language

Communication and Language Skills (English and at least one other language)

  • Ability to read, interpret and/or prepare a variety of documents, including attendance reports,enrollment reports, disciplinary reports, etc., tests, and instructional materials, confidential files,health cards, reimbursable absence forms, computer manuals, student/parent handbook,purchase orders, etc. using prescribed format and conforming to all rules of punctuation,grammar, diction, and style.
  • Ability to demonstrate proficiency through Skill Check testing (knowledge of English and second language including translation and speaking the language)
  • Ability to record and deliver information, explain procedures and follow instructions.
  • Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from diverse groups of administrators, staff, parents and the public.

Mathematical Skills

Ability to add, subtract, multiply, divide and calculate decimals and percents, including more advanced mathematical processes.

Analytical and Reasoning Ability

  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, verbal or diagram form.
  • Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions and deal with problems involving several abstract and concrete variables.

Other Skills And Abilities

  • Ability to operate a variety of office equipment including personal computer, photocopier, calculator, fax machine, telephone switchboard, etc.
  • Ability to perform duties with awareness of all district requirements and board policies.
  • Ability to use technology to accomplish job responsibilities.

Physical Attributes

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit and talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to stand; walk; and reach with hands and arms. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 75 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision. Must have current physical on file with the district certifying applicant is able to meet all job qualifications.
