Job summary

The BESS Engineer III role focuses on design, development, implementation, and optimization of BESS projects with technical leadership and project oversight.

This fully remote position requires coordination with internal teams, vendors, and customers.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or related field; Master's preferred.
  • 3+ years electrical engineering experience with focus on BESS, renewables, or power systems.
  • Experience in design, integration, and optimization of battery energy storage systems (lithium-ion, BMS, inverters, grid interconnection).
  • Familiarity with BESS control strategies, algorithms, and optimization software.
  • Proficiency in power system analysis (PSS/E, PSCAD) and related tools.
  • Knowledge of codes/standards (NEC, IEEE, IBC, NFPA, utility standards).
  • PE license is a plus, strong communication and leadership skills.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as SME for BESS engineering scopes and provide guidance to project teams.
  • Lead the design and engineering of battery energy storage systems ensuring contract and AHJ compliance.
  • Review feasibility studies, site assessments, and system sizing analyses for optimal configurations.
  • Coordinate with multiple engineering scopes and third-party partners to ensure timely delivery.
  • Provide technical oversight during procurement and drawings reviews.
  • Support testing, commissioning, and initial energization of BESS projects.
  • Mentor junior engineers and stay current with industry standards and regulations.
  • Travel as required to support project execution and customer meetings.

Job Summary

Job Description Summary: The BESS Engineer III is responsible for the design, development, implementation, and optimization of BESS projects. This role provides strategic direction, technical expertise, and engineering oversight to ensure successful delivery of BESS solutions that meet performance, reliability, and safety requirements. This role is fully remote. Specific location details and expectations will be discussed during the interview process.

Position Responsibilities and Duties
  • Serve as a technical subject matter expert (SME) for BESS engineering scopes, providing guidance and technical direction to project teams.
  • Lead and manage the design and engineering of battery energy storage systems (BESS), ensuring compliance with contracts, utilities, and AHJ requirements.
  • Review feasibility studies, site assessments, and system sizing analyses to recommend optimal BESS configurations and future augmentation provisions.
  • Serve as a senior technical contributor across electrical, civil, structural, SCADA, and HV engineering scopes on assigned projects.
  • Manage Engineers of Record and third-party engineering partners to ensure scope clarity and timely delivery.
  • Coordinate with fire protection engineers and local fire departments/ AHJ’s.
  • Develop and review technical specifications, drawings, and documentation for BESS components to support procurement activities.
  • Provide technical oversight during procurement including vendor recommendations and drawing reviews.
  • Collaborate with internal teams, vendors, and contractors to design, procure, install, and commission BESS systems.
  • Oversee system modeling, simulation, and analysis to optimize performance, efficiency, and reliability.
  • Provide engineering support during construction, including field issue resolution, design clarifications, and minor redesigns.
  • Provide engineering support for testing, validation, commissioning, energization, and initial synchronization.
  • Ability to mentor junior engineers and project teams, providing guidance, training and lessons learned on BESS design principles and practices.
  • Stay current with industry trends, standards, and regulatory requirements.
  • Support business development through proposals, presentations, and technical consultations.
  • Represent SOLV Engineering in customer and client meetings.
  • Participate in regular team meetings/ calls.
  • Travel as required to support project execution.
  • Complete other responsibilities as assigned.
Minimum Skills or Experience Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or related field; Master's degree preferred.
  • 3+ years of electrical engineering experience with focus on BESS, renewables, or power systems.
  • Expertise in design, integration, and optimization of battery energy storage systems; including lithium-ion batteries, inverters, BMS (Battery Management Systems), and grid interconnection equipment.
  • Knowledge of BESS control strategies, algorithms, and optimization software.
  • Proficiency in power system analysis (PSS/E, PSCAD, etc.) and simulation tools.
  • Strong working knowledge of applicable codes and standards (NEC, IEEE, IBC, ASCE, NESC, NFPA, utility standards).
  • Strong understanding of grid operations and regulatory requirements (FERC Order 841, IEEE 1547).
  • Strong understanding of fire protection requirements (UL9540, UL9540A, NFPA855).
  • Understanding of communication protocols used in SCADA and Energy Management Systems (IEC 61850).
  • Project management experience including budgeting, scheduling, and risk management.
  • Strong understanding of EPC engineering workflows, including design deliverables, submittals, document control, and coordination with engineering partners.
  • Excellent communication, leadership, and interpersonal skills with the ability to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams and resources.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license preferred.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision, manage multiple projects, adapt to dynamic project requirements, and deliver high-quality results under tight deadlines.
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD, Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint), Bluebeam, with ability to maintain trackers, logs, schedules, and reports.
