Job summary

SOLV Energy is seeking a BESS Engineer III to oversee the design, development, implementation, and optimization of battery energy storage systems. You will provide technical direction and engineering oversight to ensure reliable performance and safety across projects.

This remote role requires collaboration with cross-functional teams, management of Engineers of Record and partners, and mentorship of junior engineers. Travel to project sites may be required as needed.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or related field; Master's preferred.
  • 3+ years of electrical engineering experience focused on BESS, renewables, or power systems.
  • Expertise in design, integration and optimization of BESS components and grid interconnection.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as SME for BESS engineering scopes, guiding project teams.
  • Lead design and engineering of BESS systems, ensuring contract, utility, and AHJ compliance.
  • Review studies and sizing analyses to recommend optimal BESS configurations.
  • Collaborate across electrical, civil, structural, SCADA, and HV engineering scopes.
  • Manage Engineers of Record and third-party partners for timely delivery.
  • Coordinate with fire protection engineers and AHJs.
  • Develop and review specs, drawings, and docs for BESS procurement.
  • Support procurement through vendor recommendations and drawings review.
  • Work with teams to design, procure, install and commission BESS systems.
  • Oversee modeling, simulation, and analysis to optimize performance.
  • Provide engineering support during construction and commissioning.
  • Mentor junior engineers and share lessons learned on BESS design.
  • Stay current with industry trends, standards, and regulatory requirements.
  • Contribute to business development via proposals and technical consultations.

Job Description Summary

The BESS Engineer III is responsible for the design, development, implementation, and optimization of BESS projects. This role provides strategic direction, technical expertise, and engineering oversight to ensure successful delivery of BESS solutions that meet performance, reliability, and safety requirements.

This role is fully remote. Specific location details and expectations will be discussed during the interview process.

Position Responsibilities and Duties
  • Serve as a technical subject matter expert (SME) for BESS engineering scopes, providing guidance and technical direction to project teams.
  • Lead and manage the design and engineering of battery energy storage systems (BESS), ensuring compliance with contracts, utilities, and AHJ requirements.
  • Review feasibility studies, site assessments, and system sizing analyses to recommend optimal BESS configurations and future augmentation provisions.
  • Serve as a senior technical contributor across electrical, civil, structural, SCADA, and HV engineering scopes on assigned projects.
  • Manage Engineers of Record and third-party engineering partners to ensurescopeclarity andtimelydelivery.
  • Coordinate with fire protection engineers and local fire departments/ AHJ’s.
  • Develop and review technical specifications, drawings, and documentation for BESS components to support procurement activities.
  • Provide technical oversight during procurement including vendor recommendations and drawing reviews.
  • Collaborate with internal teams, vendors, and contractors to design, procure, install, and commission BESS systems.
  • Oversee system modeling, simulation, and analysis to optimize performance, efficiency, and reliability.
  • Provide engineering support during construction, including field issue resolution, design clarifications, and minor redesigns.
  • Provide engineering support for testing, validation, commissioning, energization, and initial synchronization.
  • Ability to mentor junior engineers and project teams, providing guidance, training and lessons learned on BESS design principles and practices.
  • Stay current with industry trends, standards, and regulatory requirements.
  • Support business development through proposals, presentations, and technical consultations.
  • Represent SOLV Engineering in customer and client meetings.
  • Participate in regular team meetings/ calls.
  • Travel as required to support project execution.
  • Complete other responsibilities as assigned.
Minimum Skills or Experience Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or related field; Master's degree preferred.
  • 3+ years of electrical engineering experience with focus on BESS, renewables, or power systems.
  • Expertise in design, integration, and optimization of battery energy storage systems; including lithium-ion batteries, inverters, BMS (Battery Management Systems), and grid interconnection equipment.
  • Knowledge of BESS control strategies, algorithms, and optimization software.
  • Proficiency in power system analysis (PSS/E, PSCAD, etc.) and simulation tools.
  • Strong working knowledge of applicable codes and standards (NEC, IEEE, IBC, ASCE, NESC, NFPA, utility standards).
  • Strong understanding of grid operations and regulatory requirements (FERC Order 841, IEEE 1547).
  • Strong understanding of fire protection requirements (UL9540, UL9540A, NFPA855).
  • Understanding of communication protocols used in SCADA and Energy Management Systems (IEC 61850).
  • Project management experience including budgeting, scheduling, and risk management.
  • Strong understanding of EPC engineering workflows, including design deliverables, submittals, document control, and coordination with engineering partners
  • Excellent communication, leadership, and interpersonal skills with the ability to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams and resources.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license preferred.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision, manage multiple projects, adapt to dynamic project requirements, and deliver high-quality results under tight deadlines.
  • ProficiencyinAutoCAD,Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint), Bluebeam, with ability tomaintaintrackers, logs, schedules, and reports
