Job summary

MDU Resources Group, Inc. is seeking a detail-oriented Benefits Analyst to support the HR team in benefit billing, premium processing, and account reconciliations.

The role requires coordination with senior analysts and leadership, and may involve audits and regulatory tasks. Located on site at the corporate campus in Bismarck, ND, the position emphasizes accuracy, process improvement, and timely payments while maintaining compliance across plans and vendors.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in accounting, HR management, business administration, or related field, or equivalent experience.
  • Two years’ employee benefits experience (for II) and four years’ in-depth benefits program management (for III).
  • Experience with benefits billing, audits, and regulatory compliance preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Track and monitor claims, fees, premiums, reimbursements, and costs; reconcile discrepancies and variances and prepare reports for management.
  • Draft and review benefit-related documents and communications.
  • Assist in integrating acquired companies' benefit plans and vendor interfaces.
  • Develop and distribute benefit communications and respond to employee questions.
  • Support benefit surveys, benchmarking, and presentations to leadership.

Job description

MDU Resources Group, Inc. is a member of the S&P SmallCap 600 index and is based in Bismarck, ND; operating across the Pacific Northwest and Midwest. We are seeking a detail-oriented, self-directed Finance professional to work with the HR Team to assist with the benefit billing process, which includes basic Trust accounting, ensuring timely and accurate payments, and performing regular account reconciliations to maintain financial integrity. Handle premium billing, employee and retiree contributions/payments, and prepare billings for approval and payment. Coordinate, research, report, and analyze various benefit requests from senior analysts and leadership, including coordination or benefits budget preparation. May assist with internal and external audits regarding benefit plans. Responsible for placing safety as #1 priority in day-to-day work routine for self and others.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Benefits Analyst I: ($57,110 - $71,390)

  • Must possess a working knowledge of business and human resources practices at a level normally acquired through the completion of a four-year degree in accounting, human resources management, business administration, or a related field, or equivalent experience.

Benefits Analyst II: ($63,860 - $79,830)

  • Must possess a working knowledge of business and human resources practices at a level normally acquired through the completion of a four-year degree in accounting, human resources management, business administration, or a related field, or equivalent experience; and
  • Two years’ employee benefits experience.

Benefits Analyst III: ($73,460 - $91,830)

  • Must possess a working knowledge of business and human resources practices at a level normally acquired through the completion of a four-year degree in accounting, human resources management, business administration, or a related field, or equivalent experience; and
  • Four years’ in-depth experience with employee benefits program management and compliance.
OTHER REQUIREMENTS
  • Must take all measures necessary to protect networks, devices, programs and data from cyber-attack, damage or unauthorized access.
  • This position is located on site at the MDU Resources Corporate Campus in Bismarck, ND.
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States, no sponsorships considered.
  • Subject to pre-employment drug testing and background checks.
  • May be required to maintain a valid driver’s license.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Benefits program certification or certification as a human resource professional.
  • Excel experience using formulas and descriptive statistic functions.
  • HRIS experience.
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Track and monitor claims, fees, premiums, reimbursements, and costs; reconcile discrepancies and variances (i.e., billing, RDS, enrollment, or plan details); interpret analysis; develop summary reports for management review and decision making. Alternatively, may assist senior benefits personnel in comprehensive and in-depth analysis and reporting.
  • Assist in drafting, editing, and reviewing Summary Annual Reports, Summary Plan Descriptions, 5500s, Plan Documents, retiree communications, or other corporate communications.
  • Assist in the integration of companies acquired by MDU Resources’ business unit(s) through vendor interface, benefit plan consolidation and supporting legal and regulatory activities.
  • Assist in the development, distribution, maintenance and tracking of communications, including implementation of approved benefit changes, updates, notices, open enrollment communications and other educational or required pieces; and respond to employee and retiree questions.
  • Gather, and compile, data used to respond to employee benefits surveys. Assist in benchmarking benefit plans against survey data.
  • Assist in preparing and presenting benefit changes, updates, programs, and education/training to employees.
  • Performs other tasks and special projects as assigned.
