Grand Rapids Public Schools – Franklin Campus Administration Building, Grand Rapids, Michigan.
The Benefits Assistant assists with the administration and maintenance of employee benefits programs across the district. Responsibilities include managing benefits enrollments, coordinating training, ensuring accurate data in the HRIS, performing quality checks, resolving enrollment and disability paperwork, processing payroll data, preparing reports, handling tuition reimbursement, and providing front‑desk and notary public services.
Job Summary
The position supports various benefit programs such as flex spending accounts, health, dental, vision, life insurance, short‑ and long‑term disability, and Cash in Lieu, in compliance with laws, regulations, plan documents, Board policy, and contracts.
Essential Job Functions
- Maintain a working knowledge of all benefit programs.
- Assist in developing employee benefit procedures.
- Coordinate training for district office and school personnel on benefits information.
- Ensure retention and accuracy of benefit enrollment information in the HRIS.
- Perform quality checks of benefit‑related data.
- Provide benefits information to new hires and answer enrollment questions.
- Determine eligibility and distribute enrollment materials.
- Respond to medical, personal, disability, and FMLA paperwork and vendor inquiries.
- Respond to 403(b) inquiries regarding enrollment, plan changes, and contributions.
- Assist the Benefits Coordinator with annual benefit enrollments.
- Prepare deduction and contribution reports per payroll.
- Process payroll data reports and assist state and federal reporting.
- Develop spreadsheets for financial analysis as requested.
- Organize, maintain, and scan records.
- Process tuition reimbursement requests.
- Interact with stakeholders, providing courteous and accurate customer service.
- Track and report data as requested.
- Assist with front‑desk and customer service duties.
- Perform Notary Public duties.
- Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Required Education and Experience:
- Minimum of 1 year of employee benefits experience.
- Associate degree.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience in a school system or large business with complex benefits plans.
- Experience with an automated benefits system (employee data setup and maintenance).

Job Type and Salary

Salary: $24.11 to $32.86 per hour.
