Job summary

YMCA is seeking a dedicated Sports Official to officiate soccer, volleyball and basketball games, ensuring a safe, fair, and enjoyable experience for all participants. You will enforce rules, promote good sportsmanship, and maintain clear communication with players, coaches and spectators.

You will contribute to a positive, inclusive environment, participate in trainings, and help with equipment setup and record-keeping for games and practices.

Responsibilities

• Communicate rules and decisions clearly and calmly to players, coaches and parents.
• Assist in setting up and taking down equipment and ensuring gear is in good condition.
• Address conflicts professionally and resolve disputes that arise during games.
• Attend training sessions and stay informed about rule changes and best practices in youth officiating.
• Maintain accurate records of game scores, incidents, and disciplinary actions.

As a YMCA Sports Official, you’ll be responsible for officiating soccer, volleyball and basketball games while ensuring a safe, fair, and enjoyable experience for all participants. Your role includes enforcing game rules, maintaining control of the game, and promoting good sportsmanship among players, coaches, and spectators.

You’ll play a key part in creating a positive and inclusive environment that reflects the YMCA’s core values, while addressing any safety concerns or conflicts that may arise during practices and games.

Key Responsibilities

• Game Officiating: Officiate youth sports games, ensuring adherence to the rules and regulations of the sport. Make impartial and accurate calls during games.
• Safety Monitoring: Ensure the safety of all participants by monitoring the play area, identifying potential hazards, and responding appropriately to any injuries or emergencies.
• Sportsmanship Promotion: Encourage and model good sportsmanship, teamwork, and positive behavior among participants, coaches, and spectators.
• Communication: Communicate effectively with players, coaches, and parents. Explain rules and decisions clearly and calmly.
• Game Preparation: Assist in setting up and taking down equipment for games and practices. Ensure all necessary equipment is available and in good condition.
• Conflict Resolution: Address any conflicts or disputes that arise during games in a professional and effective manner.
• Training and Development: Attend training sessions and meetings as required. Stay informed about rule changes and best practices in youth sports officiating.
• Record Keeping: Maintain accurate records of game scores, incidents, and any disciplinary actions taken.

Qualifications

• Experience: Prior experience as a sports official or referee is preferred. Knowledge of the specific sport being officiated is essential.
• Certifications: Certification in officiating (if applicable for the specific sport). CPR and First Aid certification (or willingness to obtain).
• Skills: Strong understanding of the rules and regulations of the sport. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills. Ability to make quick, fair, and confident decisions.
• Physical Demands: Ability to stand, walk, and run for extended periods. Capability to work in various weather conditions if officiating outdoor sports.
• Attributes: Fairness, integrity, patience, and the ability to remain calm under pressure. A genuine interest in working with youth and promoting positive youth development.
