Job summary

AdventHealth Shawnee Mission in Kansas is seeking a Behavioral Health Therapist to deliver comprehensive clinical services across the behavioral health continuum as part of a multidisciplinary team.

You will conduct assessments, provide individualized, group, and family therapy, coordinate discharge planning, and support utilization management and program development. Supervision of master's-level clinicians may be provided based on experience and licensure.

Job Description:

Provide Compassionate Care That Changes Lives

As a Behavioral Health Therapist, you'll provide comprehensive clinical services to patients across the behavioral health continuum. Working as part of a multidisciplinary team, you'll complete clinical assessments, provide individual, group, and family therapy, coordinate discharge planning, and advocate for patients throughout their treatment journey. This position also supports utilization management, program development, performance improvement initiatives, and may provide clinical supervision to colleagues based on experience and licensure.

Schedule: PRN Relief
Shift: Days, 8:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m., various weekdays with weekend availability preferred. Relief night shifts are also available for pickup.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide direct patient care through comprehensive clinical assessments, psychosocial evaluations, and formulation of clinical impressions.
  • Develop individualized treatment plans by identifying clinical priorities, establishing measurable treatment goals, and modifying plans based on ongoing assessment and patient progress.
  • Provide evidence-based individual, group, and family therapy to support patients and their families throughout treatment.
  • Develop comprehensive discharge plans in collaboration with patients, families, physicians, and the multidisciplinary treatment team to ensure continuity of care.
  • Document assessments, treatment plans, therapy sessions, and discharge planning accurately within the electronic medical record.
  • Collaborate with physicians, nurses, case managers, and community partners to coordinate patient care across the behavioral health continuum.
  • Communicate clinical information to managed care organizations during preauthorization and concurrent reviews while advocating for medically necessary behavioral health services.
  • Respond effectively to psychiatric crises by assessing patient safety, implementing appropriate interventions, and following established protocols for emergency situations.
  • Recognize and appropriately respond to suspected abuse while maintaining sensitivity to age‑specific patient needs.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of involuntary commitment processes and applicable behavioral health regulations.
  • Assist with onboarding and orientation of new team members and contribute to a positive, collaborative work environment.
  • Participate in departmental quality improvement initiatives and program development activities.
  • Provide outstanding customer service while maintaining therapeutic boundaries and fostering respectful relationships with patients, families, and colleagues.
  • May provide clinical supervision to master's-level clinicians working toward independent licensure, when applicable.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Demonstrated ability to establish therapeutic rapport while maintaining appropriate professional boundaries.
  • Strong assessment, crisis intervention, clinical decision‑making, and treatment planning skills.
  • Patient‑centered approach with the ability to build trust and meaningful therapeutic relationships.
  • Excellent verbal, written, interpersonal, and documentation skills.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with multidisciplinary teams across multiple levels of behavioral health care.
  • Knowledge of behavioral health regulations, managed care requirements, and community resources.
  • Clinical supervision skills for master's‑prepared clinicians working toward independent licensure preferred.
Education
  • Master's degree required.
Work Experience
  • Minimum of five years of position‑related clinical experience required.
  • Experience providing individual, group, and family therapy required.
  • Experience with behavioral health assessment, treatment planning, documentation, and discharge planning required.
  • Experience with crisis intervention required.
  • Experience utilizing community resources to support patient care required.
  • Experience working across the behavioral health continuum, including inpatient and intensive outpatient programs required.
  • Experience collaborating with multidisciplinary treatment teams required.
  • Experience treating a broad range of psychiatric disorders, substance use disorders, diverse patient populations, and varying levels of acuity required.
  • Experience with Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Motivational Interviewing (MI), and Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) preferred.
  • Previous supervisory or clinical leadership experience preferred.
Licenses and Certifications
  • Current Kansas licensure as one of the following is required.
  • Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor (LCPC)
  • Licensed Specialist Clinical Social Worker (LSCSW)
  • Licensed Clinical Marriage and Family Therapist (LCMFT)
  • Licensed Clinical Psychotherapist (LCP)
