Job summary

The Hawaiʻi State Department of Education is seeking Behavioral Technicians to support students at the specified location. The authorized level is Behavioral Technician II, with entry options down to Behavioral Technician I if needed, focusing on ABA programs, data collection, and social/communication skills.

Candidates must have a high school diploma or equivalent, plus required credits or degrees, and be a registered Behavior Technician with BACB or an approved body.

Qualifications

• High school diploma, GED, or equivalent plus one of the following: 48 semester credits incl. English and Math; AA/AS degree or higher with 48 credits; or successful ParaPro assessment.

Responsibilities

• Implements ABA program and BIP with fidelity using behavior management techniques.
• Establishes and maintains relationships with students to support social interaction.
• Promotes replacement behaviors and independence.
• Records and analyzes program data (ABC, frequency, duration, etc.).
• Provides instructional support per IEP/ABA; guides independent practice and feedback.
• Instructs and accompanies students on and off campus per instructional programs.
• Reports progress to the licensed BCBA and teacher; suggests follow-up actions.
• Participates in meetings and training to stay current with methods.

Job description

Overview

This posting is used to fill Behavioral Technician positions that provide services to students at the specified location. The authorized level for these positions is Behavioral Technician II, and applications are accepted down to Behavioral Technician I in the event of recruiting difficulties.

Salary Range

• Behavioral Technician I, SR‑14: $4,054.00 per month
• Behavioral Technician II, SR‑16: $4,388.00 per month

Responsibilities

• Implements ABA program and BIP with fidelity using appropriate behavior management techniques with students exhibiting severe, challenging behavior.
• Establishes and maintains relationships with students by pairing self as a supporting individual to build value and increase social interaction.
• Prompts safe and socially acceptable replacement behaviors to build a repertoire of communication, social interaction, and problem‑solving skills, fading prompts appropriately for independence.
• Increases the frequency and duration of safe and appropriate replacement behaviors through access to reinforcers (desired actions, attention, or removal of demands/aversive behavior).
• Collects, records, graphs, and maintains various program and behavioral data, including A‑B‑C, count, frequency, duration, latency, interresponse time, or event‑ and interval‑based recording.
• Provides instructional support tasks in accordance with the IEP and/or ABA program, using evidence‑based practices for individuals with ASD and other developmental disabilities.
• Oversees independent study activities or small group instruction, as planned, by providing clear instruction, modeling, checking for understanding, guided and independent practice, feedback, and monitoring.
• Instructs, assists, and accompanies students off campus as part of individual instructional programs including academic, social, vocational, daily‑living, and life‑skill instruction.
• Reports observations on student progress, behavior, or instructional needs to the licensed behavior analyst and teacher and provides recommendations on follow‑up activities.
• Participates in meetings, workshops, and training to stay current with behavioral and instructional methods and strategies.

Minimum Qualifications

• Basic Education Requirements: High school diploma, GED, or equivalent plus one of the following:
  • 48 semester credits of baccalaureate‑level courses, including 3 credits in English and 3 credits in Math.
  • Associate in Arts (AA) or Science (AS) degree or higher with at least 48 credits at the baccalaureate level.
  • Successful completion of the ParaPro Assessment (ETS).
• Experience Requirements:
  • Behavioral Technician I – 1 year general, 2 years specialized, 0 years technical.
  • Behavioral Technician II – 1 year general, 2 years specialized, 1 year technical.
• Registered Behavior Technician: Must be a Registered Behavior Technician with the Behavior Analyst Certification Board (BACB) or an approved national organization, and must maintain annual recertification upon hire.
• Driver’s License: Current, valid driver's license is required.
