Job Summary

The Behavioral Health Technician performs routine patient care duties including observation, monitoring, and recording changes in patient’s condition, obtaining vital signs, assisting with activities of daily living, providing emotional support and care under the direction of a nurse, and facilitating groups. They assist with contraband searches and inventory of patient belongings. They effectively utilize crisis intervention and de-escalation techniques as needed. The technician helps maintain a safe, clean, and therapeutic environment and serves as a resource for medical staff, nursing staff, security, and other Behavioral Health Technicians. Performs all other duties as assigned.

Qualifications and Requirements
  • Education and Formal Training: High school diploma required; Associate or bachelor’s degree in Psychology/Social Work preferred. Certified Nursing Assistants accepted. BLS from the American Heart Association required. Nonviolent Crisis Intervention training and certification within 30 days of employment.
  • Work Experience: Two years of psychiatric experience preferred.
  • Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Excellent verbal and written communication skills, customer service skills, competency to work with children, adolescents, and adults with mental illness, knowledge of age-specific considerations, unrestricted NCI Certification upon completion of training, general computer skills.
  • Physical Requirements: Ability to work variable shifts, bending, standing, walking, turning, lifting patients, visual and auditory acuity, manual dexterity. May involve contact with potentially infectious materials.
