Corewell Health’s Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital in Grand Rapids seeks a Behavioral Health Technician to maintain a safe, therapeutic environment for patients under direct observation. You will work under the Bedside RN, collaborating with Behavioral Health, MSW, and medical staff to follow the established plan and support patient care.

The role offers cross-training into Nursing Technician duties, with night shifts from 7:00 pm to 7:30 am and a 36-hour weekly schedule.

Qualifications

• Required High School Diploma or equivalent.
• Preference for psychiatric unit experience.
• BLS - AHA certification within 90 days.

Responsibilities

• Provide and maintain a safe, therapeutic environment for patients requiring direct observation.
• Collaborate with RN, Behavioral Health team, MSW, and Medical Team to implement the behavioural plan.
• Cross-trained to Nursing Technician role to support daily patient care and ADLs.

The Resource Center is made up of Nurses, Nurse Technicians and Behavioral Health Technicians. Team members in this department support the unit of greatest need each day at Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital. As a part of the Resource Center, team members care for various patient populations and have the experience of supporting a different unit each day. The patients, families, and team members all greatly value and appreciate the help and expertise that the Resource Center team provides daily.

Scope of work

The Behavioral Health Technician (BHT) is a role that provides and maintains a safe and therapeutic environment for the patient requiring direct observation. Working under the delegation of the Bedside RN, the BHT collaborates with the Nurse, Behavioral Health team, MSW, and the Medical Team to upload the established behavioral plan for the patient. The BHT is trained in verbal de-escalation and situational awareness and provided education on the variety of patient populations encountered. The BHT is cross‑trained to a limited scope of the Nursing Technician role to learn the skills and tasks of daily patient care and ADLs.
