Job summary

Kitsap Mental Health Services (KMHS) seeks a Behavioral Health Technician to support adults in our Inpatient Unit. You will help maintain a safe, therapeutic environment, assist with daily needs, treatment activities, and client stabilization across shifts on-site.

This role works with a treatment team to monitor client wellbeing, document care, and facilitate unit activities. Prior experience in behavioral health or customer service is preferred; Washington Food Handler credential is required

Qualifications

  • 1 year of experience in customer service, social services, or behavioral health.
  • Valid Washington Food Handler card (can be obtained after hire).
  • Eligible for an Agency Affiliated Counselor Registration.

Responsibilities

  • Meet daily health and safety needs, e.g., meals, safety checks, observation.
  • Document client care and charting per KMHS guidelines.
  • Facilitate approved group activities and support treatment teams.
  • Monitor client mental status and vitals during shifts.
  • Assist in running treatment groups and handling referrals.

Kitsap Mental Health Services (KMHS) is seeking a Behavioral Health Technician to support clients receiving care in our Adult Inpatient Unit. In this role, you will help maintain a safe, therapeutic environment while supporting daily needs, treatment activities, and client stabilization. You will work closely with the treatment team to monitor client well‑being, facilitate unit activities, and provide consistent documentation across shifts.

Primary Responsibilities:
  • Take appropriate measures to meet client daily basic needs for health and safety including but not limited to the following tasks:
    • Prepare and serve meals,
    • Conduct safety checks of the units,
    • Monitor clients according to the assigned levels of observation,
    • Provide transportation as directed by a supervisor,
    • Assist in maintaining a clean work environment,
    • Assist in maintaining sufficient inventory of food and non-food items, and
    • Other duties as assigned by a supervisor.
  • Complete all required electronic and paper charting, documentation and data entry of clients as outlined in the appropriate KMHS guidelines, manuals, policies and procedures.
  • Participate in clinical activities as directed by a supervisor including but not limited to:
    • Facilitate approved group activities
  • Conduct ongoing observation and assessment of client mental status during each shift,
  • Record client nutritional intake, sleep and vitals,
  • Run treatment groups on shift
  • Take referrals appropriately
  • Follow specific behavioral protocols for clients as directed by a supervisor, and other clinical activities as directed by a supervisor.
  • Attend all mandatory trainings on time and as scheduled.
  • Keep current on all required documentation (i.e., food handler’s permit, counselor licenses, etc.).
Minimum Qualifications
  • EXPERIENCE: 1 year (customer service, social services, or behavioral health)
  • Valid Washington Food Handler card. (Can be obtained after hire)
  • LICENSURE: Eligible for an Agency Affiliated Counselor Registration
Preferred Qualifications
  • EDUCATION: High School Diploma or GED
  • EXPERIENCE: Experienced (minimum 2 years of job-related experience)
  • Relevant experience working with clients with severe and persistent mental illness.
  • Capacity to work well with children and families.
Performance Requirements
KNOWLEDGE
  1. Maintain a working knowledge and skill in verbal de-escalation skills as outlined in MPAC/CPI trainings and other agency-mandated trainings
SKILLS
  1. Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with other employees, clients, organizations, and the public.
  2. Communication – : Communicates clearly and concisely.
ABILITIES
  1. Demonstrated ability to work cooperatively and collaboratively as a team member.

Equipment Operated: Standard office equipment including computers, fax machines, copiers, printers, telephones, etc.

Work Environment: Frequent mobility and/or sitting required for extended periods.

Mental/Physical Requirements:
  • Ability to maintain audio and visual observation at all times.
  • Ability to stand and be mobile for long periods.
  • Ability to bend, twist, reach, hold and lift as needed to successfully evade and/or participate in protective holds against client weight (40 -250lbs).
  • Ability to lift and carry items up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to remain calm and utilize safety training in potentially assaultive client interactions.
  • Ability to move quickly and confidently to assist or intervene in potentially stressful situations.
  • Successful completion of safety training, which includes demonstration of ability to: maintain balance, torso twist, forward bend, pivot, sidestep, forward and backward step, crouch, move to secure limb, knee touch to ground, kneel, get up from floor sitting or kneeling position.
