Under the supervision of the Team Leader/Program Director and the Behavioral Health Specialist I, the Behavioral Health Specialist III works as part of a multidisciplinary treatment team. This role involves engaging with individuals with serious and persistent mental illness, developing a trusting relationship, and collaborating with the team to support recovery objectives such as housing, employment, health care, and community safety. The position includes participation in 24/7 crisis intervention services within the community.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
  • Provide counseling, treatment, case management, and support services in community settings, including homes, shelters, and streets, as part of a mobile multidisciplinary team, to individuals with mental health challenges and histories of decompensation and relapse.
  • Manage a caseload of 10-12 adults with serious mental illness, possibly with co-occurring disorders, within a team of 27.
  • Assist individuals in achieving or maintaining housing, employment, social relationships, and symptom management through medication support.
  • Engage assertively in community settings where clients live, with approximately 80% of work in community environments.
  • Maintain 24-hour responsibility for clients on the ACT Team caseload via a rotating emergency phone line.
  • Deliver services in a culturally responsive manner.
  • Keep accurate case records, including notes, plans, assessments, and contact logs, following regulations.
  • Support and educate family members and other collateral contacts.
  • Refer and support engagement in external services such as medical care, vocational programs, and support groups.
  • Provide timely reports to other providers and agencies, adhering to confidentiality guidelines.
  • Participate in supervision, team meetings, training, and staff development activities.
  • Follow all rules and laws regarding incident reporting, including child abuse and neglect.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Program Director.
ESSENTIAL KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
  • Active engagement skills with resistant or symptomatic individuals, including those with psychosis or substance use issues.
  • Knowledge of evidence-based treatment and symptom management strategies.
  • Teamwork, professional communication, cultural responsiveness, and crisis decision-making skills.
  • Ability to recognize individual strengths and incorporate trauma-informed, recovery-oriented, and person-centered philosophies in work.
QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE

Bachelor's degree in social work, psychology, mental health counseling, criminal justice, or related field; BSW preferred. At least one year of experience working with individuals with mental illness, substance use, homelessness, or criminal justice involvement.
