Job Summary

Under the general supervision of the Team Leader/Program Director and the Behavioral Health Specialist I, the Behavioral Health Specialist III functions as part of a multi-disciplinary treatment team. The role involves assisting individuals with serious and persistent mental illness in their recovery by engaging with them in their setting and developing a healthy working relationship. Once established, the specialist collaborates with the individual and the IMT Team to address needs such as housing, food, clothing, safety, substance use issues, healthcare, entitlements, psychiatric care, vocational goals, and other recovery objectives. The position includes providing crisis intervention services within the community 24/7.

Essential Job Functions
  • Provide counseling, treatment, rehabilitation, case management, and support services in various community settings to mentally ill individuals, including those with a history of decompensation and relapse.
  • Manage a caseload of 10-12 adults with serious mental illness, possibly with co-occurring substance use or other disorders, within a team of 27 members.
  • Assist individuals in maintaining housing, employment, social relationships, and managing psychiatric symptoms through medication support.
  • Engage assertively in community settings such as streets, shelters, and residential environments, with about 80% of workweek in the community.
  • Maintain 24-hour responsibility for caseload through a rotating emergency phone line.
  • Deliver services in a culturally relevant and responsive manner.
  • Keep accurate case records, including progress notes, service plans, assessments, and contact logs, complying with regulations.
  • Support and educate family members and collateral contacts.
  • Refer and support engagement in services not directly provided by the team, such as medical, vocational, or psychosocial services.
  • Provide timely reports to other providers and agencies, respecting confidentiality guidelines.
  • Participate in supervision, team meetings, case conferences, training, and staff development activities.
  • Follow rules regarding incident reporting, including child abuse and neglect.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Program Director.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Ability to engage resistant individuals demonstrating symptoms of psychosis or substance use.
  • Knowledge of evidence-based treatment and symptom management strategies.
  • Ability to work collaboratively within a treatment team and communicate professionally and culturally responsively.
  • Make sound clinical decisions in crisis situations.
  • Recognize and utilize individual strengths for problem-solving.
  • Interact respectfully and professionally with consumers.
  • Incorporate trauma-informed, recovery-oriented, integrated, and person-centered philosophies into work.
Qualifications and Experience

Bachelor's degree in social work, psychology, mental health counseling, criminal justice, or related field; BSW preferred. Minimum of one year experience working with individuals with serious mental illness, substance use, homelessness, or criminal justice involvement.
