Job summary

Woodhull Medical and Mental Health Center, part of NYC Health + Hospitals, seeks a Behavioral Health Assistant under the supervision of an RN and clinicians. The role includes crisis de-escalation interventions, monitoring patients, and assisting with therapeutic activities.

Qualifications

• Associate’s degree in criminal justice, social services or a health-related area.
• Or a high school diploma/GED with 1 year of related full-time experience.
• Successful completion of restraints and seclusion training must be completed prior to performing such work.
• Training in performing vital signs and grooming within 90 days of appointment.

Responsibilities

• Performs crisis and/or de-escalation interventions when necessary.
• Assists in application/removal of restraints and seclusion as needed.
• Identifies environmental triggers and communicates with the treatment team.
• Escorts patients to required locations within and outside the health care setting.
• Monitors and controls patient, family, visitors and staff traffic in behavioral health services.
• Ensures safety through electronic scanning and safety checks before entry to areas.
• Responds to emergencies including Behavioral Response Team activations.
• Inspects belongings at admission and notes items for proper handling.
• Leads or co-leads discussion groups on anger management and related topics.
• Assists with therapeutic groups and activities.
• Assists with grooming needs and basic patient hygiene as directed.
