Position is located in the Adult Psych department.

Under general supervision, provides therapeutic interventions and advanced social work services to patients and their families, ensuring comprehensive, continuous care across the healthcare continuum and into the community. Acts as a resource to Clinical Social Worker I incumbents, demonstrating positive interpersonal relations with patients, families, visitors, and co-workers, in accordance with UMMS and departmental policies.

General Summary

Functions autonomously as part of a multidisciplinary team, offering case management, crisis intervention, biopsychosocial assessments, therapy, counseling, referrals, and treatment planning. Maintains expertise in community resources to meet diverse patient needs, applying understanding of social determinants of health and clinical best practices to promote patient functioning within their psychosocial environment.

II. Principal Responsibilities and Tasks

The following outline the general duties of this role. This list is not exhaustive.

  • Oversees all clinical assessments performed by supervisees; completes specialized assessments as needed; provides feedback to improve assessment tools.
  • Serves as the psychosocial expert within the healthcare team, ensuring care plans are culturally sensitive and address physical, emotional, social, and spiritual aspects, including emotional and behavioral health treatments. Evaluates integration of Advance Care Planning into patient care.
  • Delivers and models advanced clinical care within the practice setting, providing expertise across social work practices.
  • Analyzes department performance, offering feedback on specialty care interventions system-wide.
  • Reviews clinical charts of referrals/services and maintains a current directory of community resources for staff use.
  • Assesses referral sources and provides insights on their impact on clinical care and patient needs; leads networking with external agencies based on social determinants of health.
  • Provides counseling to staff on counseling techniques and approaches, working with patients with complex needs.
  • Offers clinical supervision, under a written contract as required by the Board of Social Work Examiners, for licensed social workers seeking supervision.
  • Provides informal and formal consultations within the healthcare system.
  • Leads patient education efforts and instructs social work practices related to psychosocial, emotional, and behavioral health issues.
  • Advocates for team members and supervisees, applying various approaches; maintains statistics on service volume, caseload, admissions, and discharges for equitable workload distribution.
  • Engages in professional development and networking through participation in professional organizations.
  • Collaborates with leadership to develop and implement policies ensuring compliance with regulatory standards.
  • Completes all assigned tasks within the department as directed by the supervisor.

Education and Experience

  • Maryland licensure as a Licensed Certified Social Worker – Clinical (LCSW-C) is required.
  • Two years of applicable experience in a Behavioral Health setting preferred.
  • Three years of relevant social work experience is required.
