Special Education Service Delivery Grounding Principles

We seek to leverage challenges for students with disabilities by ensuring they can access the support and tools to improve their educational outcomes. We believe that Special Education is a service rather than a place, and we know that most students can receive their services along with their peers in the general education classroom.

We Believe

  • All students with disabilities will have access to grade-level instruction.
  • All students can learn and have varied learning styles. We are responsible for building on students' strengths and helping them access their learning modalities.
  • Effective and rigorous co-teaching prepares students with disabilities for success and independence as productive, contributing community citizens.
  • Students with disabilities deserve to receive all the services and support delineated in their IEP to meet their goals and exceed their highest potential.

About The Position

The Behavior Technician collaborates closely with the teacher to support educational instruction for students with behavioral disabilities. Therapeutic assistance is offered through skills reinforcement and pre-academic/academic training, following the teacher's lesson plans, the social worker and school psychologist's treatment plans, the Behavior Intervention Plan (BIP), and the student's Individual Education Plan (IEP).

This 10-month full-time role will report to the campus's Assistant Director of Student Support Services. The salary range for this role is $43,926 - $89,082.

You Will

  • Assist teachers with providing therapeutic and instructional support for students with emotional and behavioral disorders;
  • Implement Behavior Intervention Plan;
  • Utilize behavior strategies defined in the Behavior Intervention Plan;
  • Assist teachers with collecting behavioral data and implementing behavior support strategies;
  • Maintain appropriate documentation, records, and reports;
  • Administer behavior inventories and checklists to support the development of student behavior intervention plans;
  • Maintain a caseload of students with identified emotional and behavioral needs;
  • Consult and collaborate with the Assistant Director of Student Support Services and the BCBA, if applicable;
  • Attend IEP meetings as needed and provide input in developing behavior intervention plans for students needing behavior support services;
  • Create a positive and supportive classroom culture and environment that puts relationships with students first;
  • Engage parents and families in their student's academic success;
  • Ensure services and supports comply with Washington, D.C., and federal laws and regulations; and
  • Be an active member of the school community, attending and participating in school events outside of regular school hours and completing other duties as assigned

Qualifications

You Have:

  • High School Diploma or the equivalent
  • Familiarity and experience with special education students in the District of Columbia.
  • Demonstrated experience, comfort, and success in building a positive and supportive classroom culture;
  • Used models and exemplars to drive instruction;

  • A Washington, D.C. teaching certification;
  • A strong background in differentiated and individualized instruction;
  • Experience in hands-on learning, such as experiential learning or project-based learning;
