Job summary

St. Clair County RESA Creekside Learning Center in Port Huron, Michigan seeks a Behavior Technician to support a student under supervision of Intervention Specialists and School Social Workers. 187-day schedule, 32.5 hours per week, non-union, at-will position; starting immediately.

Responsibilities include implementing BIP, modeling interventions for staff, and providing coaching. Requires an Associate degree preferred and CPI/CRP training beneficial; valid MI driver’s license required.

Qualifications

  • Associates degree in human services or related field preferred.
  • RBT training is a plus.
  • Experience with individuals with disabilities and challenging behavior.
  • Ability to implement and support BIP and de-escalation strategies.
  • CPR/First Aid training preferred.
  • Valid Michigan driver's license and auto insurance.
  • Must lift up to 50 lbs and maintain safety.
  • Regular attendance and confidentiality.

Responsibilities

  • Able to follow a student’s Behavior Intervention Plan one-to-one or in groups.

  • Understand de-escalation strategies and apply when needed.
  • Follow BIP interventions and seek clarification when needed.
  • Accurate data collection and documentation of BIP implementation.
  • Demonstrate flexibility and take verbal directions.
  • Reflect on feedback to improve intervention effectiveness.
  • Respect students, families, and staff; work as a team.
  • Travel to local districts to train staff and support transitions.
  • Use established communication processes and maintain organization.

Behavior Technician Primarily at Creekside Learning Center

187 Day Schedule

Non-union, at-will, service personnel position

POSITION SUMMARY:

Behavior Technicians work under the supervision of Intervention/Behavior Specialists and School Social Workers. Behavior Technicians provide support to a specific student within the student’s assigned classroom or program. The support provided by this position is to facilitate implementation of a student’s Behavior Intervention Plan (BIP) and assist the student in learning more socially acceptable behaviors. Behavior Technicians will model for district staff the implementation of specifically identified interventions. They will provide ongoing feedback and coaching to staff, with the intent to decrease this level of support and move to gradual release of responsibility for BIP implementation to building and district staff. The Behavior Technician will take direction from the Intervention Specialist and School Social Worker, and will report to the Principal of Creekside Learning Center and the Director of Special Education.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Associates Degree in an area of Human Services preferred
  • RBT (Registered Behavior Technician) Training a plus
  • Past work experience with persons with a disability
  • Experience supporting students who present challenging behavior, and implementation of positive behavior strategies
  • CPR and first aid training preferred
  • Valid Michigan driver’s license and automobile insurance.
  • Must be able to lift 50 lbs, including pulling, pushing, bending, stooping and twisting.
  • Regular predictable attendance is an essential function of the position
  • CPI Training and willingness to receive ongoing de-escalation training
  • Board Maker Experience a plus

ESSENTIAL JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Demonstrate an intuitive sense for addressing challenging behavior in a positive manner
  • Demonstrate the ability to understand the function of behaviors, how adult behavior influences student behavior and student behavior influences adult behavior
  • Able to consistently follow a student’s specific Behavior Intervention Plan in a one-to-one, small group or classroom setting
  • Able to model for district staff the implementation of specifically-identified interventions, and provide ongoing feedback and coaching to staff
  • Willing to be trained in crisis prevention techniques and physical intervention, and perform approved physical intervention techniques when required
  • Capable of understanding the vital role of de-escalation strategies, and knowing when and how to use them
  • Able to understand the intent of a BIP and the interventions, and ask for clarification when needed
  • Competence with timely and accurate data collection and documentation to reflect implementation of the BIP
  • Demonstrate flexibility and the ability to take verbal direction
  • Reflect on and utilize feedback to increase intervention effectiveness
  • Respectful of student, parents and staff at all levels, and works well in a team and for the dignity for the student
  • Ability to travel to local districts to train support staff and support the students as they transition back to their districts.
  • Utilize an established communication process

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:

Employment Date: Immediately pending Board approval and successful completion of employee entrance physical, drug screening and background checks.

Employment Type: Non-union, at-will position, 32.5 hours per week, Monday through Friday

Work Schedule: School year 187 work day calendar

Work Day: 8:00 am – 3:30 pm

Salary Range: $20.00 to $25.00 per hour dependent on experience and credentials
