Job summary

Brightway Living & Learning in the Town of Huntington is seeking a dedicated Behavior Support Worker for their School Age Program. This role focuses on educating individuals with developmental disabilities in a supportive environment. Ideal candidates will possess a BA in Psychology and have experience with autism.

Shifts Available:

Monday – Friday, 8 am – 3 pm (32.5 hours per week)

About Brightway Living & Learning: Brightway Living & Learning is a premier non‑profit provider of human services on Long Island, offering educational, residential, day habilitation, and vocational programs. Building on a 65‑year legacy as the Developmental Disabilities Institute (DDI), Brightway supports over 1,600 children and adults with autism and other developmental disabilities through a full continuum of care. The Role: Behavior Support Workers in the School Age Program are creative, energetic, and career‑oriented teaching professionals who are motivated to educate individuals with developmental disabilities in an ungraded self‑contained classroom. Workers receive ongoing training and support from board‑certified behavior analysts and other qualified professionals to enhance career growth. Our school programs operate on a 12‑month calendar. This is a great opportunity to gain experience working in a classroom and community setting following the principles of applied behavior analysis.

What You Bring to Brightway Living & Learning:

  • Must possess a BA Degree in Psychology or related field. If the BA is in an unrelated area, must hold a Registered Behavior Technician (RBT) certification.
  • Must have at least 1 year experience with individuals with Autism or developmental disability.
  • Must possess in‑depth knowledge of Applied Behavior Analysis and Positive Behavioral Intervention and Support.
  • SCIP Certification is required (may be obtained within 2 months of hire).

What You'll Do:

  • Instruct and direct classroom staff on receiving and recording student goal information.
  • Analyze student information to ensure conformity with Behavior Support Plans.
  • Recommend improvements in process and provide counseling or disciplinary action for improper data collection by staff.
  • Assess and train staff on the implementation of Behavior Support Plans.
  • Develop and monitor behavior programs in collaboration with behavior specialists.
  • Provide behavior support and crisis intervention for students on the caseload (about 18 students) or as needed.
  • Assign behavior‑related tasks and activities for students to classroom staff as needed.
  • Manage a secondary caseload to facilitate collaboration and provide coverage for other Behavior Support Staff.
  • Provide quality assurance for the integrity of Behavior Support Plans.
  • Observe staff on plan implementation and recommend methods of improvement or disciplinary action for non‑compliance.
  • Manage staff use of tools and equipment such as token economies, reinforcers, contracts, and protective gear.
  • Lead or participate in team meetings and specialized training meetings related to PBIS and behavior management.
  • Collaborate with behavior specialists and other team members regarding behavior issues in school, home, and community settings.
  • Prepare documentation and assessments for CSE meetings, including behavior data, observations, and paperwork for BRC or BSP summaries.
  • Teach in‑services or classroom meetings on relevant topics such as ABC Data and Reinforcement.
  • Participate in bus duty.
  • Assist with overall program functions such as safety, student intake screenings, bus duty oversight, lunch coverage, and toileting assistance.

What You Must Be Able to Do:

  • Move or push tables and other heavy objects up to 20 lb.
  • Lift or move 20 lb. mats.
  • Run after a student up to 500 ft.
  • Run to a classroom in need up to 500 ft.
  • Kneel, twist, and bend.
  • Respond to fire alarms.
