Summary

The Behavioral Health Technician II role blends bedside duties with administrative and educational responsibilities in order to foster the professional excellence of the assistive personnel on inpatient and residential psychiatric units. This is a leadership role requiring flexibility and a dedication to ongoing improvement. Under the supervision of the RN, the BHT II models the provision of a safe, supportive and therapeutic environment for psychiatric patients, provides direct patient care, conducts therapeutic group sessions, and provides input to the multidisciplinary team to help develop and carry out the plan of care for all patients on assigned unit. Working closely with the CNIV and Nurse Manager, the BHT II aids in the oversight, scheduling, orientation and continuing education of the assistive personnel on the unit and models exemplary patient care in accordance with principals of the recovery model.

Responsibilities

Minimum 24 hours of bedside staffing per week with administrative time as allowable by unit staffing levels, acuity and other factors. The BHT II works with CNIVs and Nurse Manager to coordinate the scheduling of assistive personnel, the orientation of new assistive personnel and periodic assistive personnel meetings on their home unit.

The BHT II is an expert in de-escalation and is able and willing to coach and support other support staff in order to prevent and diffuse escalating situations in the inpatient or residential environment.

Interacts with patients on a one to one as well as small group basis. Facilitates assigned groups in ways which encourage and require maximum patient participation and interaction, appropriate to functional level of group members. Able and willing to coach and support other assistive personnel to provide high-quality patient programming

Oversees the ordering, restocking and maintenance of unit supplies.

Provides protection and control for patients as required to ensure patient safety in the facility. Participates in restraining combative patients as necessary. Provides care and monitoring of patients in seclusion and/or restraint. Runs mock behavioral codes to ensure ongoing unit readiness if a hands-on approach is needed in an emergency.

Actively participates in at least two quality improvement projects per year.

Works with the CNIV and Nurse Manager to facilitate assistive personnel meetings on the home unit. Works with the unit charge nurse to assist in the provision of patient assignment as necessary.

As the unit safety coordinator, the BHT II is an expert in the safe unit environment. This includes maintaining departmental safety plans, submitting biannual safety reports and surveys, completing required safety education and training and reporting injuries and hazard all in accordance with Departmental Safety Coordinators Job Description policy. Oversees the safety of unit supplies and periodic unit searches as necessary. Tracks and maintains records of unit work orders in order to ensure a safe environment.

After training, is proficient in the Involuntary Commitment process.

Aids patients in reality orientation, participates in behavior modification plans/therapy, provides informal support therapy to patients/families, provides verbal de-escalation of potentially aggressive patients, aids in the physical management of aggressive/out-of-control patients, facilitates age appropriate play for children, and monitors the therapeutic milieu activities on assigned unit to ensure that emotional and safety needs of patients are met.

Observes, collects, and documents patient information obtained while providing care and promptly report significant changes in the patient's condition to a registered nurse or physician.

Assists in interviewing patients and their families for routine admission data. Orients patients and families to the facility. Provides data input during team discussions and meetings to assist in developing therapeutic plans and objectives.

Provides direct personal care to patients as outlined in plan of care for routine activities of daily living including bathing, personal hygiene, feeding and dressing. Assists patients with position changes, range of motion exercises, transfers and walking. Obtains and records vital signs, intake and output amounts or other measures as delegated. Observes patients and assesses progress on daily basis and reports significant changes in patients' condition and/or behavior to supervising RN.

Reinforce routine teaching given to patients by the registered nurse or physician and document patient understanding of instructions. Distributes patient education materials at the request of patients and/or health care providers

  • Listed as a Nursing Assistant I by the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services
  • Crisis Prevention Institute (CPI) certification

Professional Experience Requirements

  • Requires two (2) years of relavent experience in a behavioral health environment.

Knowledge/Skills/and Abilities Requirements

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with patients and hospital staff.
  • Ability to work with, express sensitivity and understanding, and secure the cooperation of patients, including maintaining empathetic attitude towards patients and other staff.
  • Ability to work with groups of patients or individuals in didactic or recreational groups.
  • Ability to guide and coach staff to provide safe and excellent patient care.
  • Ability to keep calm in stressful situations.
  • Must be fluent in verbal and written English language.
  • Possesses proficiency in computer skills.
