Job summary

YMCA of the Triangle in Apex, NC seeks a Youth Counselor to lead and connect with youth participants in the before-school program. Under the Youth Site Director, you will help plan activities, mentor campers, and ensure a safe, engaging environment.

The role runs Monday through Friday from 6:50 a.m. to 8:50 a.m. Compensation includes $11/hour base plus $2/hour for before-school duties, totaling $13/hour. Some certifications may be required; experience with children is preferred.

Qualifications

• Must be at least 16 years of age.
• Experience working with children or teens preferred but not required.
• Experience in outdoor education, planning activities, crafts, songs/music, skits, sports, or recreational games preferred.
• Ability to relate effectively to diverse groups from all social and economic backgrounds.
• Multilingual desired but not required.

Responsibilities

• Supervises and builds relationships with a group of elementary and/or middle school students.
• Implements program activities that are culturally relevant, developmentally appropriate and consistent with YMCA values.
• Creates an atmosphere that is fun, safe, friendly and challenging.
• Mentors and models responsible behavior while leading children in the program.
• Models and facilitates relationship-building skills in all interactions and maintains positive relationships with campers, parents, school staff and other YMCA staff.
• Adheres to YMCA policies and procedures, including medical and disciplinary situations, child abuse prevention and emergency management.
• Ensures space and equipment used for the program is taken care of and left in good, clean condition daily.
• Attends staff meetings and trainings.
• Develops and maintains collaborative relationships with community organizations.
