Job summary

Action-Youth-America in Long Beach is seeking a dedicated Program Leader to engage and inspire students while providing a safe, fun, and inclusive space for academic, social, and emotional growth. The role supports youth to reach their full potential during after-school programs.

Shift hours run Monday to Friday with morning or afternoon blocks; site-based assignments vary to meet program needs and student schedules. Strong communication and reliability are essential.

Qualifications

• Experience with children in educational settings, childcare, camp programs, or tutoring roles.
• Strong classroom management skills and knowledge of childhood development principles.
• Ability to lead enrichment-based activities in indoor or outdoor settings.
• Excellent communication skills and a compassionate approach to working with diverse students.
• Capable of supervising up to 20 students at once.

Responsibilities

• Work directly with students at a school site under the Site Coordinator.
• Supervise students during program hours, ensuring safety and well-being.
• Establish clear, consistent behavior expectations via positive reinforcement.
• Facilitate engaging lessons, homework sessions, arts and crafts, sports, or performing arts.
• Communicate regularly with the Site Coordinator about students’ progress or concerns.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Hours and Scheduling

Monday to Friday, schedule varies between 6:30am-9:00am or 2:00pm-6:00pm during the academic school year.

Program Leaders may work at any AYA program site and receive their assignments based on their availability and AYA program needs.

Responsibilities

• Under the direction of the Site Coordinator, Program Leaders work directly with students at a school site.
• Supervise students during program hours, ensuring their safety and well-being at all times.
• Establish clear, consistent expectations for behavior through effective behavior management techniques and positive reinforcement.
• Facilitate engaging lessons, homework sessions, arts and crafts, sports coaching, or performing arts activities to foster creativity and teamwork.
• Communicate regularly with the Site Coordinator or the Assistant Site Coordinator about student’s progress and/or any concerns that arise.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

• Experience working with children in educational settings, childcare, camp programs, or tutoring roles.
• Strong classroom management skills coupled with knowledge of childhood development principles.
• Ability to lead enrichment-based activities in an indoor or outdoor setting.
• Excellent communication skills and a compassionate approach to working with students of all backgrounds.
• Capable and willing to oversee a group of up to 20 students at any given time.
• High School Diploma or G.E.D. required.
• Must have full availability during program hours Monday to Friday (1:45pm to 6:00pm).
• Must pass Live Scan (criminal background check via fingerprinting) & TB test.
• Must have reliable transportation.
