The Lead Industrial Electrician will oversee and perform a variety of electrical maintenance and repair activities for industrial machinery, equipment, and systems. This role includes troubleshooting, installation, and upgrading electrical systems, ensuring compliance with safety regulations, and leading a team of electricians to ensure that electrical systems are functioning optimally. The Lead Electrician is expected to work autonomously, provide guidance to junior team members, and collaborate with other departments to maintain continuous production operations.
Primary Duties:
- Lead and perform troubleshooting, maintenance, and repairs on industrial electrical systems, including motor control circuits, PLCs, switchgear, lighting, power distribution, and other electrical components.
- Supervise, mentor, and train a team of electricians, providing direction and ensuring work is completed to company standards. Assign and review work to ensure quality and timely completion.
- Oversee and perform installations and upgrades of electrical systems, machinery, and equipment as per project specifications, electrical codes, and safety standards.
- Use diagnostic tools to analyze and resolve complex electrical issues quickly to minimize downtime. Apply knowledge of electrical principles to repair or replace components as needed.
- Coordinate and lead electrical projects, ensuring they are completed on schedule, within budget, and meet safety and regulatory standards.
- Ensure all electrical work is performed in accordance with the National Electrical Code (NEC), local codes, and industry safety standards. Conduct regular safety checks, inspections, and enforce the use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
- Maintain accurate records of electrical work, preventive maintenance schedules, system modifications, and inventory of electrical components and materials. Complete detailed reports on completed work.
- Work closely with mechanical, maintenance, and operations teams to ensure efficient coordination of repair and maintenance efforts. Assist in the training of operators on electrical systems and troubleshooting.
- Develop and implement preventative maintenance plans to reduce unscheduled downtime and extend the life of electrical equipment and systems.
- Respond to electrical emergencies and breakdowns promptly, providing support to mitigate downtime and ensure operational continuity.
- Proactively suggest improvements to electrical systems, processes, and procedures to increase efficiency, safety, and reliability in the workplace.
Qualifications:
- Journeyman or Master Electrician certification (where applicable).
- Minimum of 5-7 years of experience in industrial electrical maintenance, with at least 2 years in a leadership or supervisory role.
- In-depth knowledge of industrial electrical systems, including PLCs, VFDs, electrical panels, motors, transformers, and power distribution systems.
- Strong understanding of electrical codes (NEC), safety standards, and regulations.
- Experience with troubleshooting electrical control systems and automation.
- Proficiency with electrical testing and diagnostic tools (e.g., multimeters, circuit testers, oscilloscopes).
- Excellent leadership, organizational, and communication skills.
- Ability to read and interpret electrical blueprints, schematics, and technical manuals.
- Experience with computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS) is a plus.
Preferred Skills:
- Experience with high-voltage systems or large industrial systems.
- Certification in safety or environmental standards (e.g., OSHA, NFPA 70E).
- Knowledge of automation systems, robotics, or other advanced electrical control systems.
- Ability to train and develop other electricians or technical personnel.
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to lift and carry heavy electrical equipment and components (up to 50 lbs or more).
- Ability to stand, walk, kneel, and work in confined spaces or elevated areas.
- Ability to work in varying environmental conditions, including temperature fluctuations and exposure to noise.
- Ability to use hand tools, power tools, and electrical testing equipment safely.
