Job summary

YMCA of Greater New York’s Rockaway YMCA beacon program seeks a Beacon Outreach Coordinator to lead outreach and inclusion efforts for chronically absent youth. You will build relationships in communities, promote engagement in Beacon programming, and support staff with planning and delivering meaningful activities.

You will coordinate recruitment, ensure safety, and work with counselors to create engaging events, while adhering to funder standards and internal policies.

Qualifications

• Two years of education in youth/community programs.
• At least one year of experience with youth, families, and community development.
• Proficiency with Word, Excel and PowerPoint; strong interpersonal skills.

Responsibilities

• Promote an inclusive, welcoming environment for staff and participants.
• Outreach to hard-to-reach youth and young adults for Beacon programming.
• Forge relationships with chronically absent or disengaged youth to engage them in school programs.
• Act as a credible messenger with strong community connections and conflict mitigation.
• Assist marketing and recruitment in target communities for beacon programming.
• Maintain positive relationships with community stakeholders and guardians.
• Ensure health, safety, and risk management procedures are followed by staff and participants.
• Report incidents per YMCA policies and funder requirements.
• Collaborate with Counselors and Beacon Director to plan programming and events.
• Support pre-program training and participate in meetings and events.
• Adhere to Department of Health/Education, DYCD, YMCA policies and standards.

The Rockaway YMCA is seeking a Beacon Outreach Coordinator who will play a critical role in the successful operation of the Beacon Program. The Outreach Coordinator is responsible for providing leadership, oversight, and support to outreach and community inclusion efforts. The Outreach Coordinator will have the skills and personality needed to forge relationships with youth who are chronically absent or have dropped out of school and persuade them to engage in Beacon programming and in school.

Key Responsibilities

• Promote an inclusive, welcoming, and respectful environment that embraces the diversity of all staff and participants and promotes a positive program spirit.
• Facilitate effective outreach to hard-to-reach youth and young adults who do not participate in afterschool or community center programs.
• Effectively forge relationships with youth who are chronically absent or have dropped out of school and persuade them to engage in Beacon programming and school.
• Act as a “credible messenger”, maintain strong community connections, and address conflicts that have the potential to undermine community cohesion and trigger violent clashes.
• Assist in the marketing and distribution of program information and recruitment in communities that might otherwise attend beacon programming.
• Develop and maintain positive relationships with community stakeholders and parents/guardians through regular communication.
• Ensure participants' health, safety, and well-being by understanding, maintaining, and ensuring that staff and participants follow Risk Management and safety procedures.
• Report all incidents in accordance with the Y policies and procedures.
• Work with Counselors and the Beacon Director to plan and implement meaningful programming and special events.
• Support the development and facilitation of required pre-program training. Actively participate in training sessions, designated meetings, and special events.
• Adhere to all Department of Health, Department of Education, DYCD, YMCA of Greater New York, and funder standards, expectations, and regulations.

Desired Skills & Experience

• Minimum of two (2) years of education in a program area related to working with youth and/or communities.
• Minimum of one (1) year of experience working with youth, families, and community development, including social and emotional learning, skill-building, youth leadership, neighborhood priorities, trauma-informed approaches, provision of services for individuals with disabilities, and cultural competence, including sensitivity to LGBTQ issues.
• General knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
• Strong interpersonal skills, leadership qualities, and comfortable working with diverse youth and adults.
