The City of Del Mar is recruiting for Beach Maintenance Workers in the Public Works Department or the Community Services Department. Â The recruitment is ongoing

GENERAL PURPOSE

Under supervision (Beach Maintenance Worker I) or general supervision (Beach Maintenance Worker II), provides general assistance for a limited period of time in support of assigned operations including, but not limited to: general manual labor; clean and perform routine maintenance of City beaches, open spaces, and community service facilities; as directed, set up and arrange Power House Community Center for events.

Seasonal Workers may work for a limited period of time or on a regular part-time schedule throughout the year. However, Seasonal Workers may not exceed 1,300 hours of paid time within a fiscal year (July 1 - June 30).

SCHEDULE

The following shifts are available in the Public Works and Community Services Departments

Friday/Saturday/Sunday: 6am - 4pm; 9am - 7pm. Other days and times may be available upon request.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

An incumbent assigned in this class is responsible for the maintenance and upkeep of City beaches, open spaces, and community service facilities. Seasonal Worker (Beach Maintenance) is differentiated from Utility Worker I/II in that the latter is responsible for the upkeep, maintenance and repair of a wide range of City equipment and facilities, including water and sewer infrastructure, requiring a more diverse skill set, licenses and certifications, and knowledge base.

Beach Maintenance Worker I

Examples of essential duties include

  • Cleans City beaches and open spaces; removes trash;
  • Operates, maintains and performs minor repairs of beach cleaning equipment.
  • Performs custodial and routine repair and maintenance duties at Power House Community Center and other City facilities, including public restrooms; sweeps, mops and buffs floors; vacuums carpet, rugs, steps and mats; cleans and sanitizes restrooms; orders and replenishes assigned supplies; cleans grounds; removes trash; cleans windows and furniture; performs minor and routine repairs to community service facilities, such as replacing lightbulbs, painting and patching drywall.
  • As directed, organizes and sets up chairs, tables, kitchen and other equipment in City facilities for assigned events.
  • Identifies and, via radio, notifies management of problems on the beach, parks and streets before, during and after hours.
  • Provides general assistance and information to visitors to the community center and beach-goers; appropriately responds to or resolves routine questions, inquiries and complaints; if warranted, refers requests and complaints to management.

Advancement to the "II" level is based on demonstrated proficiency in performing the assigned functions, the needs of the City, and is at the discretion of higher level supervisory or management staff.

  • Positions in this class are highly-skilled seasonal staff. The distinguishing roles of this position, advanced knowledge of specialized skills, training, and increased supervisory roles.
  • Employees within this class are distinguished from the Beach Maintenance Worker I by the performance of the full range of duties as assigned.
  • Employees at this level receive limited instruction or assistance, and are aware of the operating procedures and policies of the work unit.
  • Employees in this class are flexibly staffed and are normally filled by advancement from the Beach Maintenance Worker I level or have equivalent experience.
  • Beach Maintenance Worker II is expected to participate in on-the-job training of new-hires.
  • May also be assigned to general maintenance and basic repairs of bikes and e-bikes.

Desired Minimum Qualifications

Knowledge of

Procedures, practices and techniques related to the upkeep of City beaches and facilities; practices and procedures of two-way radio communication.

Ability to

Establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff and the public; follow written and oral instructions.

Training and Experience

A typical way of obtaining the knowledge, skills and abilities outlined above is graduation from high school or G.E.D. equivalent.

Minimum Qualifications

A valid California driver's license, Class C, with a satisfactory driving record.

Beach Maintenance Worker II

Training and Experience

At least two years of general maintenance and repair experience.

Minimum Qualifications

A valid California driver's license, Class C, with a satisfactory driving record.

While performing the duties of this class, an employee is regularly required to walk, stand and sit for long periods; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, bend, crouch or crawl; reach with hands and arms; talk and hear both in person and by phone or radio; use hands to finger, handle, feel or operate standard office and maintenance tools and equipment; and drive a vehicle. The employee regularly lifts, pushes or pulls equipment up to 100 pounds.

For Parking Enforcement duties, there are specific vision abilities required by this job that include close vision, distance vision, color vision, the use of both eyes, depth perception, peripheral vision and the ability to adjust focus.
