Head Lifeguard

The City of Biddeford’s Recreation Department has a great opportunity for a seasoned lifeguard with ocean experience. The Head Lifeguard is expected to have direct contact and oversight of all Lifeguards and support the mission of the Recreation Department.

Responsibilities

  1. Assists with the hiring process of new lifeguards
  2. Responsible for supervision, training, testing, and scheduling of staff
  3. Conducts opening and closing procedures, and oversees the public beaches during hours of operation
  4. Maintains the safety of the public beach areas, swimming areas, and all employees and staff, at all times
  5. Maintains a good, positive attitude, and acts as a role model for all staff and beach patrons
  6. Responsible for making the staff schedule, creating rotations, and staffing the beaches appropriately
  7. Ensure that all lifeguards know the policies, rules, and regulations related to the beach and water and enforces said policies to prevent accidents
  8. Establishes weekly trainings and workouts for all lifeguards and ensures that they maintain adequate physical condition
  9. Oversees the care and appropriate use of equipment
  10. Establishes emergency procedures for beach sites and remains alert in order to detect potential hazardous conditions and/or patrons in distress
  11. Acts in emergencies to rescue and render appropriate first aid procedures to patrons as necessary
  12. Performs administrative duties, including daily records of patrons assisted, patrons rescued, first aid provided, weather conditions, and ocean conditions
  13. Courteously answers questions from beach patrons when possible, without being distracted from lifeguard duties
  14. Weekend and holiday work required

Required Qualifications

  1. Experience working in ocean conditions
  2. Experience managing staff
  3. Ability to exercise good judgment in enforcing rules firmly and tactfully
  4. Reacts swiftly and calmly in emergencies
  5. Can identify and prevent dangerous situations or emergencies, and take effective and appropriate action
  6. Ability to remain alert for long periods of time
  7. The employee must occasionally move equipment such as rescue boards, umbrellas, and other lifeguard equipment
  8. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus
  9. A willingness to demonstrate a commitment to the City of Biddeford's work around diversity, equity, accessibility, and inclusion

Job Type: Seasonal, June – Mid September

Salary: $21.00 - $23.00 per hour

Schedule: 40 hours per week (could be more)

Work Location: In-person

Licenses/Certifications:

  1. First Aid and CPR Certified
  2. Current Lifeguard Certification

Under the general supervision of a Head Lifeguard or Assistant Head Lifeguard, this employee guards the safety of patrons at assigned ocean and freshwater beaches in the City and provides information pertaining to beach and water conditions.

Responsibilities

  1. Ensures the safety of all patrons by preventing and responding to emergencies
  2. Responsible for the swimming and beach areas during hours of operation
  3. Prevents accidents through the enforcement of policies, rules, and regulations related to beach use
  4. Remains alert in order to detect potentially hazardous conditions and patrons in distress and renders appropriate first aid to patrons as necessary
  5. Educates the public about the beach and water safety and other public safety matters, while maintaining compliance with state and local laws that pertain to beach ordinances
  6. Assists in performing administrative duties, including daily records of patrons helped, patrons rescued, first aid provided, weather conditions, and ocean conditions
  7. Helps maintain the general appearance and cleanliness of the beach areas
  8. Courteously answers questions from beach patrons when possible, without being distracted from lifeguard duties
  9. Enforces the rules consistently and fairly
  10. Participates in trainings as required
  11. Maintains and monitors assigned equipment and supplies
  12. Regular attendance on scheduled workdays is required

Required Qualifications

  1. Participates in and completes daily workouts and trainings
  2. Learns ocean water safety, and the rules and regulations of swimming and beach areas
  3. Exercises good judgment in enforcing rules firmly and tactfully
  4. Reacts swiftly and calmly in emergencies
  5. Ability to remain alert for long periods of time
  6. Capable of working well with others and the public
  7. The employee must occasionally move equipment such as rescue boards, umbrellas, and other lifeguard equipment
  8. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus
  9. Willing to demonstrate a commitment to the City of Biddeford's work around diversity, equity, accessibility, and inclusion

Job Type: Seasonal, June – Mid September

Salary: $18.00 - $22.00 per hour

Schedule: 40 hours per week (could be more)
