Working Location: 2651 Gulf Drive South, Bradenton Beach, Florida 34217
Work Hours: 40-hour work week including weekends and holidays. 9am - 5pm during winter, 9am - 7pm during summer (Memorial Day to Labor Day).
This position is responsible for protecting lives and enforcing beach safety rules and ordinances on County beaches. Responsibilities include advanced technical work in water rescue, administering basic emergency medical care, and potentially transportation, as defined by Florida statutes, administrative codes, and local protocols. Responds to water and land emergencies, rescuing beachgoers, boaters, and patrons both in the surf and onshore. Serves in a lifesaving and community capacity.
NOTE: FRS Retirement Class:Beach Lifeguard I: Special Risk for EMT License; $1.00/hr. incentive for EMT license and Rescue Diver certification.
Beach Lifeguard II: Special Risk for EMT License; $1.00/hr. incentive for Rescue Diver certification.
Working Conditions: Outdoor/marine environment, high noise levels; swimming long distances, treading water, climbing vessels, working around piers and jetties; lifting up to 100 lbs. alone, 150 lbs. with assistance.
This is a safety-sensitive position. Employment is contingent upon passing pre-employment and random drug screenings. Failure to pass results in a 3-year disqualification.Essential Functions: Observing and supervising bathers, monitoring ocean/weather conditions, initiating/rescuing patrons, administering first aid/emergency medical care, maintaining logs, enforcing codes, working independently or in teams, completing reports, and performing other duties including extreme weather or emergency responses.
Specific Duties for Lifeguard Levels: - Lifeguard I: Responds as a Personal Rescue Craft Rescuer, trains as PRC Patrol/Surf Operator.
- Lifeguard II: Operates as a PRC Surf Patrol, responds to emergencies, manages scenes, and trains in PRC operations.
Minimum Qualifications: High school diploma or equivalent, swimming proficiency in four strokes, running ½ mile in 3:30 or less, swimming 500m in open water in 10 minutes, demonstrating rescue techniques, valid Florida driver license, and certifications such as BLS, EMT, CPR, and scuba certifications as specified.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Recognizing danger, maintaining courteous relationships, performing physical activities, rescue and medical skills, operational knowledge, effective communication, and ability to work under stress.
