Job Description Summary

We are seeking an experienced and visionary Battery Management System (BMS) Architect to lead the design and development of advanced BMS solutions for our grid asset portfolio. This role involves overseeing system architecture, ensuring safe and seamless integration of technologies into various battery types, optimizing performance for grid applications, and maintaining high safety and reliability standards. Collaboration with cross-functional teams is essential to deliver innovative energy storage solutions vital for power grid stability and efficiency.

Job Description

Essential Responsibilities

  1. Lead the definition and assessment of future BMS system architectures for grid-scale Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS).
  2. Create high-level functional product specifications based on grid requirements, safety standards, and integration needs with diverse battery technologies.
  3. Develop comprehensive architecture views of BMS software and hardware components for BESS applications.
  4. Benchmark different BMS architectures and explore design options to optimize cost, performance, power, and size.
  5. Design and develop advanced BMS control algorithms for optimal battery performance, safety, and longevity in grid-connected systems.
  6. Define specifications and requirements for the overall battery system within our BESS portfolio, ensuring safe integration of various battery chemistries.
  7. Lead the development and integration of BMS software controlling battery operation within grid-connected systems.
  8. Ensure BMS designs facilitate safe and efficient integration of proprietary technologies into different battery types used in our BESS portfolio.
  9. Analyze potential innovation areas at system, architecture, and software levels, focusing on advancements relevant to grid-scale energy storage.
  10. Ensure compliance with industry standards, regulations, and grid interconnection requirements for BESS.
  11. Collaborate with firmware/software teams to program chargers and battery fuel gauges for grid applications.
  12. Support development teams in implementing and integrating BMS software with management systems.
  13. Stay updated on advancements in battery technology, BMS architectures, and grid energy storage standards.

Required Qualifications

  1. Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering or a related field.
  2. Minimum of 10 years of experience in system engineering and product design for BMS, with a focus on grid-scale energy storage.
  3. Expert knowledge and experience in BMS for BESS.
  4. Experience working with utilities, energy storage developers, or grid operators on BMS.
  5. Strong understanding of grid interconnection standards, power grid dynamics, and renewable energy integration.
  6. Experience with communication protocols like Modbus, DNP3, IEC 61850.
  7. Knowledge of safety standards such as UL 9540, NFPA 855, IEC 62933.

Desired Characteristics

  1. Experience in microcontroller programming and embedded systems for BMS.
  2. Familiarity with battery management algorithms and their hardware, firmware, and manufacturing interactions.
  3. Understanding of different battery chemistries relevant to grid storage and their limitations.
  4. Ability to work effectively in cross-functional teams.
  5. Self-driven with strong business acumen and passion for grid-scale energy storage.
  6. Willingness to travel for meetings.
  7. Master’s degree in electrical engineering with specialization in power systems or energy storage.
  8. Experience with simulation tools like MATLAB/Simulink.
