Job summary

Telluride School District R-1 basketball seeks a Head Coach for Telluride High School (9-12) boys. This education-based program develops athletes with integrity and character, emphasizing safety and teamwork.

The successful candidate will plan practices, supervise games, maintain equipment, meet CHSAA coaching requirements, mentor student-athletes and collaborate with the Athletics Director to foster school-community partnerships.

Qualifications

• 1. Must meet the head coaching requirements of the Telluride School District and the coaching requirements set forth by CHSAA.
• 2. Experience coaching in an Education Based athletic program.
• 3. Certified teacher preferred.
• 4. Playing and/or coaching experience preferred.

Responsibilities

• Accept and implement an educational based athletic approach to Middle/High School athletics.
• Follows the rules and regulations of the school, the conference and the Colorado High School Activities Association.
• Complete all CHSAA Coaching requirements before the start of the first competition.
• Attend clinics, seminars, online classes and in-service programs to improve coaching skills and stay current.
• Organize, schedule and supervise practice sessions.
• Supervise the use of equipment in your sport.
• Assist the athletic assistant with inventory and purchasing recommendations.
• Regularly inspect equipment and facilities to insure student athlete safety.
• Represent the school in a professional manner in demeanor, language, and conduct.
• Develop and maintain knowledge of the activity being coached.

To accept the responsibility of the program and work with the students/athletes in the sport assigned and to provide life lessons that will positively impact the physical, social and emotional well being of all who are involved.

Duties and Responsibilities

• 1. Accept and implement an educational based athletic approach to Middle/High School athletics.
• 2. Follows the rules and regulations of the school, the conference and the Colorado High School Activities Association.
• 3. Complete all CHSAA Coaching requirements before the start of the first competition (HS only, MS must have CPR/First aid/ AED certification)
• 4. The head coach is encouraged to maintain a membership in the appropriate coaches association and participate so that our school has representation.
• 5. Attend clinics, seminars, online classes and in-service programs in order to improve coaching skills and to stay current with new trends in coaching, training, conditioning and safety procedures.
• 6. Coaches are expected to attend school and conference meetings, and are encouraged to attend state coaches meetings
• 7. Give input about and then carry out the interscholastic schedule as drawn up by the Athletics Director.
• 8. Organize, schedule and supervise practice sessions.
• 9. Supervise the use of equipment in your sport
• 10. Assist the athletic assistant with the development of a written annual inventory and make recommendations for purchases to the Athletics Director.
• 11. Assists the athletic assistant with the distribution and collection of equipment and supplies.
• 12. Regularly inspect equipment and facilities to insure the safety of each student athlete.
• 13. Responsible for reporting scores and disseminating team information for publicity.
• 14. Participate in pre-season and post season meetings with the Athletics Director. The post-season meeting will serve as an evaluation conference.
• 15. Delegate responsibility to the assistant coaches as appropriate.
• 16. Work to develop continuity between the community and school programs.
• 17. Provide leadership in his or her program for all levels (9th, 10th, JV and Varsity) of the sport.
• 18. Only allows athletes cleared by the Athletic department to participate.
• 19. Maintains appropriate supervision of his/her program at all times (locker rooms, practices, events, bus rides, etc.). Supervises any and all space used by athletes while they are present. Secures all doors, windows,locks and checks lights before leaving the building.
• 20. Assures that their team, at all times, will reflect proper attitude and conduct at home or away.
• 21. Establish and use a system of communication to athletes and parents that will include explanation of program policies, awards, procedures, goals and schedules.
• 22. Has responsibility for the end of season awards programs.
• 23. Represent the school in a professional manner in demeanor, language, and conduct (based on standards established by the Athletics Director).
• 24. Develop and maintain current knowledge of the activity being coached.
• 25. Are responsible for school issued keys and will not give them to anyone. If lost, must report immediately to the Athletic Department.
• 26. All other duties as assigned by the Activities Director.

Performance of the job will be evaluated annually at the end of season
