Job summary

Job description

Harlem Children’s Zone, Inc. (HCZ) is a multi-site, multi-program community organization that provides a comprehensive network of education, social, health, and recreation services to more than 26,000 children and adults in Central Harlem. HCZ’s promise is to create a "tipping point" in the neighborhood by surrounding children with a college-oriented peer and adult environment. HCZ is nationally recognized for its early and progressive intervention programs.

The Promise Academy Afterschool program is an extension of the Promise Academy day school. It serves 500+ students in grades K‑12, offering a safe, nurturing, educational environment that fosters confidence and social development through project-based learning, arts enrichment, tutoring, homework help, health and physical fitness education, leadership development, and team sports.

Part‑time Basketball Coach – A role that will develop all aspects of a high‑quality basketball athletics program and provide scholars with effective leadership.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Develop, implement, and execute the basketball athletics curriculum.
  • Create a program that includes daily conditioning, fundamental drills, and a strategic playbook.
  • Communicate and work effectively with students, colleagues, and parents.
  • Monitor and report on student progress and performance both in the classroom and on the court.
  • Collaborate and consult with staff on student performance in various athletic activities and schoolwork.
  • Maintain ongoing communication with the Athletics Program Director.
  • Develop positive relationships with students that promote wellness, growth, respect, and self‑esteem.
  • Act as a positive role model for students.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualification, Skills, and Knowledge Requirements
  • A commitment to the mission and programs of HCZ.
  • Experience working with youth and adolescent populations.
  • A degree and at least two years of coaching experience.
  • Strong knowledge and a keen understanding of basketball.
  • Ensure that athlete curricula are structured and have clear learning goals.
  • Solid understanding of youth sports and safety guidelines.
  • Ability to travel to away games or events.
  • Strong leadership and organizational skills, excellent writing and communication skills.
  • Positive, enthusiastic, collaborative, flexible, and approachable attitude.
  • Ability to effectively engage and motivate students.
Schedule
  • Fall/Spring
    • Monday–Thursday: 2 PM – 7:30 PM
    • Friday: 2 PM – 7 PM
  • Summer
    • Monday–Thursday: 11 AM – 4:30 PM
    • Friday: 11 AM – 4:30 PM

Potentially working Saturdays or Sundays is required, depending on the sport and game schedule.
