Qualifications

• ICS courses: IC 100, 200, 700, 800 required for response readiness.
• Bloodborne pathogens & Hazardous Materials training required before responding.
• Must have valid Alaska driver’s license for vehicle operation.

Responsibilities

• Under direct supervision, perform tasks to accomplish tactical objectives.
• Pull and advance attack hose lines.
• Search for victims in burning buildings.
• Conduct ventilation, forcible entry, and property conservation tasks.
• Inspect and care for PPE, fire apparatus, and related equipment.
• Maintain cleanliness and readiness of fire stations.
• Assist Event Commander at the EOC as needed.

Job Summary

The employee occupying the position of this class is responsible for completing assigned tasks as a basic firefighter assigned to a crew under direct supervision at various emergency scenes.This is a non bargaining unit.

Minimum Requirements

Successful completion of Mat-Su Borough Basic Firefighter course or equivalent training program from another fire service organization.

Vision Requirements: Ability to see and touch in order to effectively and safely operate equipment, drive Borough vehicles, and perform other essential job functions.

Hearing Requirements: thresholds no greater than 25 dB without hearing aids.

Incident Command System classes required before being cleared to respond to calls: IC 100, 200, 700 and 800.

Blood Borne Pathogens & Hazardous Materials courses required before you can respond to a call.

Possession of a valid driver’s license issued by the State of Alaska for the type of vehicle or equipment operated. Must be at least 19 years of age with one (1) year of driving experience and an acceptable driving record.

Must be able to successfully pass a pre-employment background check, drug screen, physical exam, and respirator fit test in addition to an annual respirator fit test. Must complete the Hepatitis B vaccination series and complete Tuberculosis (TB) screening, or provide signed declinations, in accordance with applicable health and safety guidelines.

Duties/Responsibilities

Under direct supervision functions at the task level to accomplish tactical objectives.

Pulls and advances attack hose lines.

Conducts searches for victims in burning buildings.

Performs ventilation, forcible entry, property conservation, and other assigned tasks on fire and emergency scenes.

Inspects and cares for assigned personal protective equipment, fire apparatus and associated equipment.

Maintains fire stations for cleanliness and readiness.

When staffing the EOC performs the functions assigned by the Event Commander to efficiently and effectively respond and manage anincident.

Performs related work as required.
