Job summary

West Tennessee Healthcare in Jackson, TN is seeking an Emergency Medical Technician for full-time or registry status. Responsible for basic emergency medical care during transport and treatment of sick and injured patients, with flexible shifts and on-call requirements.

Job Description Summary:

Candidates can be considered for full time or registry (work as needed) status.

Responsible for basic emergency medical care in the transportation and treatment of sick and injured patients. Under the general supervision of the Director and the direct supervision of the Shift Manager, the Emergency Medical Technician is responsible for emergency care of patients transported on assigned shifts, with flexible schedules. Completion of a certification course of study to allow applicant to sit for EMT certification exam for the State of Tennessee required. Current Class D Tennessee Driver's License. Current Basic Life Support card from American Heart Association or equivalent. Employee is subject to call back and overtime as required by the hospital, the department director, or the shift supervisor. Employee is subject to random drug screening.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
  • Determine the extent of illness or injury by performing patient assessment, recognize and interpret vital signs and other symptoms, report findings to an authorized Emergency Department/Trauma Center Registered Nurse and/or physician, and request orders for appropriate treatment protocol.
  • Administer basic trauma and cardiac life support procedures to the sick and injured at the scene and en route to a hospital.
  • Maintains basic clinical skills as required by defined Scope of Practice and / or departmental / organizational protocols and standards.
  • Establishes radio communication with hospital Emergency Department/Trauma Center receiving the patient to advise them of the situation.
  • Assists in extrication of victims from damaged motor vehicles and hostile environments.
  • Record and enter patient data and other information on appropriate forms and logs.
  • Perform duties as assigned in daily operation of quarters, involving patients, vehicles, department and equipment, following policies, procedures, and operating instructions.
  • Report activities to the Shift Manager including unusual occurrences and complaints from patients, families, physicians, or employees.
  • Assist with patient care duties in the Emergency Room/Trauma Center as requested or required for further training.
  • Attends all required department education meetings.
  • Participate in the clinical education of EMS students as needed.
  • Contribute to a positive work climate and the overall team effort of the department and hospital, perform related responsibilities as required or directed and greet guest in accordance to our Guest Excellence principles.

JOB SPECIFICATIONS:
EDUCATION:
  • Completion of a course of study to allow applicant to sit for EMT certification exam for the State of Tennessee.
LICENSURE, REGISTRATION, CERTIFICATION:
  • Current State Certification as an Emergency Medical Technician.
  • Current Class D Tennessee Driver's License.
  • Current Basic Life Support card from American Heart Association or equivalent.
EXPERIENCE:
  • Knowledge of local hospitals and Medical Center EMS policies, procedures, standing orders, protocols, area locale, radio communication procedures, emergency and medical agencies, pharmacology, solutions and concentrations as acquired through a minimum of 4-6 week orientation program and at the discretion of the Director. The operation and maintenance of equipment and vehicles as acquired through an orientation program.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
  • Skill and proficiency in the principles, concepts, and techniques of the EMS profession as normally acquired through the completion of a basic EMT course.
  • Knowledge of policies and procedures of the hospital and completion of skills check sheet for designated areas as acquired through 3 month probationary period.
  • Basic computer skills preferred.
