The completion of Birmingham’s I-59/20 Central Business District (CBD) Interstate bridges brings about a renewed focus on the space underneath the bridges known as City Walk BHAM. The goal of City Walk BHAM is to provide a space to assist in reconnecting Birmingham and create a destination and common area open to all citizens.

City Walk BHAM spans 10 city blocks, from 15th St N to 25th St N – almost a mile in length. The entire area encompasses 31 acres, which will provide a space to assist in connecting Birmingham.

Summary/Objective

The CityWalk Bartender is responsible for delivering an exceptional guest experience in the CityWalk social space. This banquet bartender role is essential for creating a positive and welcoming bar experience for guests attending events. Responsibilities include checking customer’s identification, to ensure they meet the legal drinking age, preparing and serving a variety of alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages. The incumbent will ensure a clean, well-stocked bar area and provide exceptional hospitality. You will be responsible for making drink recommendation, offer daily specials, and maintain the bar inventory. Work is conducted largely outdoors and is a non-tipped position.

Essential Duties/Responsibilities

Demonstrates understanding and full performance ability in each of the following:

  • Display a courteous, welcoming, friendly and professional demeanor.
  • Prepare and serve alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages according to standard recipes and customer preferences.
  • Periodically check on guests to ensure all needs and expectations are being met.
  • Continuously monitor guests for potential intoxication and determine when alcohol service should cease.
  • Check customer identification to ensure they meet the legal drinking age.
  • Sanitize and clean service areas, bar tops, and surrounding bar areas, including washing glassware and utensils.
  • Utilize Point of Sale (POS) and registers to accurately run tabs, prepare checks, and successfully record all financial transactions.
  • Monitor inventory levels and supplies; assist in ordering as needed.
  • Protect establishment and patrons by strictly adhering and enforcing company policy as well as all state/local Health Department regulations sanitation, safety and alcohol beverage control policies.
  • Stay current with drink trends and menu changes to provide informed recommendation to guests.
  • Promptly report any maintenance issues, safety hazards, or emergencies to the proper personnel.
  • Performs other duties as required.

Work Environment

This environment is fast paced and moderately demanding. Work is typically performed outdoors, regularly exposed to wet and/or humid conditions and outside weather conditions.

Physical Demands

Duties require extended periods of standing and walking. Limited amount of physical effort such as walking, standing, climbing, bending, stooping, squatting, and kneeling. Ability to lift up to 50lbs with or without assistance, while maintaining good balance. Must be flexible enough to reach above shoulder level and be able to push and pull for brief periods of time. Visual acuity, speech recognition, and speech clarity.

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work

Part-time position; hours of work must be flexible and varied to meet the demands of the events of the facility. Must be able to work extended and/or irregular hours including day, nights, weekends, and holidays, as needed.

Required Education And Experience

  • Must be of legal age according to state regulation to serve alcohol (21 years of age)
  • Minimum of one (1) year related knowledge, experience, and skills in the restaurant industry, preferably as a bartender. Outdoor restaurant or venue experience is highly preferred.
  • High School Diploma or G.E.D, preferred.
  • Valid State of Alabama Driver License.

  • Capable of working independently without continuous supervision.
  • Demonstrate the ability to interact with the public in a professional, positive and confident manner.
  • Ability to understand oral and written instructions in English.
  • Ability to work in a team environment.
  • Excellent time management skills.
  • Working knowledge of the occupational hazards and applicable safety precautions associated with assigned work.
  • Effectively manage conflict in a diplomatic and professional manner.
  • Basic knowledge of beer, wine and spirits, and familiarity with standard drink recipes.
  • Ability to competently operate the POS and beverage equipment.
  • Proficient with basic computer and general office equipment including but not limited to computer, telephone, copier/fax machine, calculator, etc.
