Group Fitness Instructor – Job Description And Performance Expectations
Our Group Fitness Program provides a lively and energetic environment in our club. We offer a variety of classes tailored to meet different fitness needs. As a Group Fitness Instructor, you are responsible for creating engaging classes that deliver the best experience, impacting our ability to attract and retain members. Your professionalism and personality are highly valued. Classes should be inclusive for all levels—balanced, approachable, and motivating. You have the opportunity to be the host of the party, connect members, and inspire ongoing participation.
Teaching Standards
- Create a fun, safe, and engaging class environment.
- Vary music and movements regularly.
- Start and end classes on time; plan to arrive 10 minutes early for setup.
- Maintain professional conduct and respect members and colleagues.
- Keep the room clean and equipment properly stored.
- Record class participation numbers.
- Prepare a detailed lesson plan aligned with the class format.
- Provide clear visual and verbal instructions, including modifications for all fitness levels.
- Monitor workout intensity through various methods.
- Engage with participants, especially newcomers, to foster connections.
Member Experience
- Interact courteously and be accessible before and after classes.
- Greet returning members by name and welcome new members.
- Offer positive feedback and encouragement.
- Maintain a friendly demeanor and eye contact.
- Arrange coverage for absences, aiming for no more than one substitute every two months.
- Assist with creating a positive environment through small gestures and club involvement.
Communication
- Promote club events and other departments during announcements.
- Build relationships with the front desk and review club communication boards.
- Stay updated with club communications and updates.
- Notify management promptly in case of emergencies.
- Invite members and non-members to join classes to boost participation.
- Maintain ongoing communication with instructors and management.
Requirements
- Maintain current CPR certification.
- Dress professionally and appropriately.
- Teach at least two classes weekly and be flexible across multiple locations.
- Substitute at least six times per year, responding promptly to coverage requests.
- Undergo evaluations three months after hire and annually.
- Obtain professional certification within one year of hire.
- Enhance your knowledge through workshops, articles, and trend updates.
- Participate in department meetings.
- Be a team player and assist wherever needed.
- Les Mills Certified BODYPUMP Instructors must be certified.
Safety
- Understand and follow Safety and Emergency Action Plans.
- Address safety issues immediately.
- Follow all incident reporting procedures.
- Report equipment or facility concerns promptly.
