Job description

Little Wichita Barn Animal Care Staff

Our Little Wichita Barn is home to dogs and cats on some of the most important journeys of their lives. Some are recovering from difficult pasts, learning to trust people, receiving medical care, or patiently waiting for a foster or forever family.

This small shelter environment typically cares for approximately 10 to 15 dogs and 30 cats. We’re looking for a dependable, compassionate, and hardworking part‑time teammate who believes every animal deserves kindness, patience, dignity, and the opportunity to thrive.

What You’ll Do

  • Provide exceptional daily care for dogs and cats, including feeding, watering, administering medications as directed, and closely monitoring each animal’s health, appetite, bathroom habits, activity level, and behavior.

  • Walk and exercise dogs throughout your shift while providing enrichment, positive interactions, socialization, and confidence‑building activities tailored to each dog’s individual needs.

  • Provide cats with gentle handling, enrichment, socialization, playtime, and affection based on their individual comfort levels and care plans.

  • Support animals recovering from medical procedures by following care instructions carefully, monitoring incisions, mobility, appetite, and behavior, and promptly reporting concerns to leadership or the medical team.

  • Clean and disinfect kennels, cat rooms, crates, litter boxes, play areas, bowls, bedding, toys, floors, furniture, and common spaces to maintain a safe, sanitary, and welcoming environment.

  • Pick up waste, scoop litter boxes, handle laundry and dishes, remove trash, organize supplies, restock inventory, and help keep all animal‑care areas clean and comfortable.

  • Provide calm, compassionate handling and positive attention that helps animals feel secure, reduce stress, build trust, and prepare for successful adoption.

  • Observe and document changes in health, appetite, mobility, behavior, or activity level, communicating concerns quickly with supervisors and the medical or behavior teams.

  • Follow all individual feeding instructions, medication schedules, handling restrictions, behavior plans, and shelter safety procedures.

  • Assist with dog introductions, animal movement, enrichment projects, basic training exercises, and daily routines as directed by shelter leadership.

  • Help prepare animals and shelter spaces for adoption appointments, foster meetings, volunteer activities, fundraising events, and community outreach.

  • Capture quality photos and videos that showcase each animal’s personality and help them connect with potential foster and adoptive families.

  • Accept and organize deliveries, assemble crates or animal‑care equipment, maintain supply areas, and assist with general facility organization.

  • Assist with light facility upkeep and other shelter duties as needed to keep the Little Wichita Barn operating safely and efficiently.

What We’re Looking For

  • Animal care experience preferred — Comfortable working with dogs and cats of different sizes, ages, personalities, medical needs, and energy levels.

  • Compassion and patience — Many of our animals are healing physically or emotionally and need calm, consistent, and positive interactions.

  • Strong observation skills — Able to recognize changes in health, appetite, mobility, bathroom habits, stress level, or behavior and communicate concerns promptly.

  • Commitment to safety — Willing to follow animal‑handling restrictions, sanitation procedures, medication instructions, and established shelter protocols.

  • Physical stamina — Able to lift up to 50 pounds, walk dogs, bend, kneel, clean animal spaces, and remain on your feet for extended periods.

  • Reliable and responsible — Our animals depend on consistent routines, dependable caregivers, punctuality, and thorough completion of daily tasks.

  • Team player — Works well alongside shelter leadership, medical staff, behavior specialists, volunteers, and fellow animal caregivers.

  • Strong communication skills — Able to document animal‑care information accurately, communicate concerns clearly, and provide helpful updates during shift changes.

  • Comfortable with shelter conditions — Willing to work around animal waste, cleaning products, odors, barking, shedding, and animals experiencing medical or behavioral challenges.

  • Photography and social media skills are a plus — Able to capture engaging photos and videos that help animals find loving homes.

  • Must be at least 18 years old.

Schedule & Commitment

This is a part‑time, hourly position.

Must commit to a consistent work schedule to provide stability for the animals in our care.

Must be available to work some holidays, evenings, and weekends.

Reliable attendance and punctuality are essential because animals require care every day.

Flexibility to assist during medical recoveries, emergency intakes, staffing shortages, or special events is a plus.

Why Join Us?

At Always & Furever, every animal deserves more than a kennel or a temporary place to stay. They deserve to feel safe, receive compassionate care, and experience the kindness and love they may have been missing.

Every meal served, litter box cleaned, dog walked, medication given, photograph taken, and quiet moment of encouragement helps an animal move closer to healing and finding a family.

This work can be physically demanding, messy, emotional, and incredibly rewarding. The animals depend on caregivers who are willing to show up consistently, pay attention to the details, and treat every soul with compassion.

If you’re hardworking, dependable, and passionate about giving dogs and cats the love, dignity, and respect they deserve, we’d love to welcome you to the Always & Furever family.

With kindness, dignity, and respect.

Thank you for helping us say yes to those who need it most.
