The Banner is seeking a Food Reporter to join our Arts & Culture team and cover dining, trends, and the people behind Baltimore's food scene. The role focuses on reporting openings, hidden gems, and the forces shaping where and what people eat across Baltimore and surrounding counties.

We value curiosity, commitment to rigorous journalism, and the ability to translate complex issues in accessible, engaging stories for readers. Evenings and weekends may be required to cover events.

Qualifications

• At least 5 years of journalism experience, preferably covering food, dining, culture or related beats.
• Exceptional reporting, interviewing and writing skills.
• Ability to generate original story ideas and exclusive reporting.
• Strong news judgment and balance between daily coverage and enterprise work.
• Ability to explain complex issues clearly and engagingly.
• Strong source-building and community trust development.

Responsibilities

• Pitch, report and write a mix of breaking news, enterprise stories, profiles and service journalism.
• Identify and cover major restaurant openings, closings, trends and developments.
• Produce reader-focused journalism to help people discover new dining venues and experiences.
• Develop stories at the intersection of food with business, culture, development and community life.
• Build a deep source network across chefs, restaurateurs, workers, developers and community leaders.
• Collaborate with editors, photographers and designers to create multi-platform storytelling.
