Job summary

Hy-Vee is looking for a Bakery Clerk to help run a busy, welcoming bakery area. You will greet customers, assist with product selection, and ensure freshness and proper stocking of baked goods. Training is provided and no experience is required.

You will work with a team in a store bakery environment, following safety and sanitation guidelines while delivering friendly service that keeps customers coming back for their favorites.

Qualifications

• No diploma required; six months related experience preferred.
• Willingness to train and learn on the job.
• Good math and communication skills.

Responsibilities

• Greet customers and provide friendly bakery service.
• Assist customers in finding products and taking orders at the bakery counter.
• Monitor product freshness, appearance, and supply levels throughout your shift.
• Prepare, finish, and replenish baked goods for baking.
• Follow sanitation procedures and keep work area clean and organized.
• Operate the department register to process payments when applicable.
• Maintain a tidy department and support teammates for a positive customer experience.

What You'll Do

• Deliver outstanding customer service by greeting customers warmly and making them feel welcome in the bakery
• Assist customers with finding products, reaching items, carrying heavy purchases, and taking orders at the bakery counter
• Review daily orders and monitor product freshness, appearance, and supply levels throughout your shift
• Prepare, finish, and replenish baked goods as needed, pulling product from the cooler or freezer to prepare for baking
• Follow and maintain proper sanitation procedures, keeping your work area clean and organized at all times
• Check in product, put product away, and review invoices as needed
• Operate the department register to process payments where applicable
• Remove trash in a timely manner and maintain a tidy department
• Work alongside your teammates to ensure a smooth, positive experience for every customer
• Maintain compliance with Hy‑Vee's dress code, hygiene standards, and all company policies
• Assist in other store areas and take on special projects as needed

Your Skills

You don't need prior experience for this role! We'll happily train and support you as you grow. To be successful, you'll need to be able to:

• Follow written and verbal instructions with confidence
• Use basic math skills for simple addition, subtraction, counting, and recording
• Communicate clearly with customers and teammates in a friendly, helpful way
• Stay organized and keep up with the pace of a busy bakery environment
• Less than a high school diploma or equivalent accepted; up to six months of similar or related experience preferred

Reporting Relationships

Accountable and Reports to: Store Director, Store Manager, Assistant Managers of Perishables, Store Operations, and Health Wellness Home, and Bakery Department Manager

Education and Experience

Less than a high school diploma or equivalent accepted Up to six months of similar or related work experience preferred

Physical Requirements

• Frequently stand and walk throughout a shift in sales, food service, or delivery areas
• Where applicable to the role: ability to safely use sharp knives and blades for food preparation
• Where applicable to the role: exposure to heat- and burn-related hazards associated with cooking, baking, or grilling equipment
• Where applicable to the role: ability to operate a delivery vehicle in accordance with applicable DOT standards
• Perform repetitive standing, walking, reaching, and bending associated with order fulfillment, POS transactions, and cleaning/sanitation duties

Working Environment

This role is based in a store bakery environment where things stay busy and engaging. You may encounter exposure to flour dust, noise, temperature extremes, and damp conditions, all pretty standard for a bakery setting. The role also involves working with and around standard bakery equipment and may include exposure to electrical equipment and cleaning products or solvents. Safety is always a priority, and training is provided to help ensure a safe and supportive work environment.
