Job summary

Hy-Vee, Inc. is seeking a Bakery Clerk to help keep the bakery running smoothly and welcoming to customers. You will prepare and replenish baked goods, assist at the bakery counter, and contribute to a warm experience that brings customers back.

No prior experience is required; we will train and support you as you grow within a team-focused store environment, ensuring quality and customer satisfaction daily.

Qualifications

• Follow written and verbal instructions with confidence.
• Use basic math for simple addition and counting.
• Communicate clearly with customers and teammates.
• Stay organized and pace with a busy bakery environment.
• Less than a high school diploma or equivalent accepted; up to six months of related experience preferred.

Responsibilities

• Greet customers warmly and make them feel welcome in the bakery.
• Assist customers with finding products and taking orders at the counter.
• Review daily orders and monitor product freshness and supply levels.
• Prepare, finish and replenish baked goods and pull from cooler/freezer as needed.
• Maintain sanitation and keep work area clean and organized at all times.
• Operate the department register to process payments where applicable.
• Work with teammates to provide a smooth, positive customer experience.
• Adhere to dress code, hygiene standards, and company policies.

What You'll Do

• Deliver outstanding customer service by greeting customers warmly and making them feel welcome in the bakery
• Assist customers with finding products, reaching items, carrying heavy purchases, and taking orders at the bakery counter
• Review daily orders and monitor product freshness, appearance, and supply levels throughout your shift
• Prepare, finish, and replenish baked goods as needed, pulling product from the cooler or freezer to prepare for baking
• Follow and maintain proper sanitation procedures, keeping your work area clean and organized at all times
• Check in product, put product away, and review invoices as needed
• Operate the department register to process payments where applicable
• Remove trash in a timely manner and maintain a tidy department
• Work alongside your teammates to ensure a smooth, positive experience for every customer
• Maintain compliance with Hy-Vee's dress code, hygiene standards, and all company policies
• Assist in other store areas and take on special projects as needed
• You’ll receive direction and support from: Store Director, Store Manager, Assistant Managers of Perishables, Store Operations, and Health Wellness Home, and Bakery Department Manager

Your Skills

• Use basic math skills for simple addition, subtraction, counting, and recording
• Communicate clearly with customers and teammates in a friendly, helpful way
• Stay organized and keep up with the pace of a busy bakery environment
• Less than a high school diploma or equivalent accepted; up to six months of similar or related experience preferred

Reporting Relationships

Accountable and Reports to: Store Director, Store Manager, Assistant Managers of Perishables, Store Operations, and Health Wellness Home, and Bakery Department Manager

Education and Experience

• Less than a high school diploma or equivalent experience accepted
• Up to six months of similar or related work experience preferred

Physical Requirements

• Frequently stand and walk throughout a shift in sales, food service, or delivery areas
• Where applicable to the role: ability to safely use sharp knives and blades for food preparation
• Where applicable to the role: exposure to heat- and burn-related hazards associated with cooking, baking, or grilling equipment
• Where applicable to the role: ability to operate a delivery vehicle in accordance with applicable DOT standards
• Perform repetitive standing, walking, reaching, and bending associated with order fulfillment, POS transactions, and cleaning/sanitation duties

Working Environment

This role is based in a store bakery environment where things stay busy and engaging. You may encounter exposure to flour dust, noise, temperature extremes, and damp conditions, all pretty standard for a bakery setting. The role also involves working with and around standard bakery equipment and may include exposure to electrical equipment and cleaning products or solvents. Safety is always a priority, and training is provided to help ensure a safe and supportive work environment.
