Virginia Beach City Public Schools is hiring a Baker/Cook to prepare and serve bakery and food items in a school cafeteria. Under the Cafeteria Manager's direction, you will maintain quality, safety, and sanitation while following USDA guidelines.
The role requires at least 5 years of large-scale bakery experience, a High School Diploma or GED, and may include culinary school experience. The position pays $16.79–$24.49 per hour and involves 7-hour days across multiple Virginia Beach locations.

In addition, the position will assist the cafeteria manager in all aspects of the operation to ensure the cafeteria is maintained in an orderly, safe and sanitary condition and is compliant with USDA guidelines.

Must have a thorough knowledge of baking methods and equipment; methods of preparing and serving baking items in large quantities. Must have the ability to plan and organize work, interpret and follow instructions, work under pressure, work independently or in a team setting, perform mathematical computations, and read ingredients and measure recipes. Must have the ability to implement, analyze, and develop new products and expand/decrease recipes in accordance with federal guidelines. Must have the ability to work cooperatively with administrators, staff, parents, students, consultants and teachers, as well as direct others in the preparation of bakery and other food items. Must be able to recognize and report hazards and apply safe work methods.
Required:
High School Diploma or GED. Must have a minimum of 5 years of largescale preparing bakery items or equivalent experience.
Preferred:
Culinary School experience. Previous experience working in a sustainable kitchen and/or school food services environment.
A comparable amount of training and experience maybe substituted for the minimum qualifications.
Must have the use of sensory skills in order to effectively communicate and interact with other employees and the public using the telephone and personal contact as normally defined by the ability to see, read, talk, hear, handle or feel objects and controls. Frequent walking, standing, bending, grasping, fingering, repetitive motion, and reaching. Occasional sitting, stooping, and crouching, Work involves moderate exposure to unusual elements such as extreme heat, fumes, smoke, unpleasant odors, hazards such exposure to chemicals, moving mechanical parts, etc. and/or loud noises. Ability to lift up to 50 pounds frequently. Requires timely and regular adherence to established work schedules.

Compensation will be based on job-related creditable years of full-time, verified work experience. The entry-level rate will be awarded at the time of hire. Upon the return of employment verification forms from the candidate's current and previous employers, the rate will be adjusted if creditable full-time experience is confirmed.
