Job summary

Qualifications

Responsibilities

  • Provide security to the Dallas Municipal Courtroom when in session and maintain order.
  • Escort prisoners between jail and courtroom and ensure proper restraints.
  • Use two-way radio and maintain clear radio procedures in emergencies.
  • Observe and document actions; testify to report details when required.
  • Coordinate with supervisors and other agencies during incidents or emergencies.
  • Answer calls for emergencies and provide first aid when needed.

Job description

Performs routine and complex public safety and peacekeeping services while providing courtroom security for the Dallas Municipal Court, relating to proceedings of that Court. Also provides escort and security for prisoners in custody while escorting them between the jail and courtroom.

This position works fewer than 20 hours/month, typically on Thursday mornings.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Provide security to the Dallas Municipal Courtroom when in session; prevent prisoner escape, isolate prisoners from contraband, maintain order among prisoners and other persons being arraigned and present in the courtroom.
  • Properly place appropriate restraints on prisoners of Polk County Jail being transported and provide security while being escorted to and from Dallas Municipal Court for arraignments, trials and other hearings.
  • Must be able to use own judgment in deciding appropriate course of action to resolve difficult situations; is expected to handle emergencies without assistance when practical.
  • Communicate effectively with assisting officers using a two-way police radio while maintaining proper radio procedures. Maintains normal availability by radio or telephone for consultation on major emergencies or precedent
  • Maintains contact with police supervisory personnel to coordinate activities, provide mutual assistance during emergencies and provides general information about department activities.
  • Responds to other emergency service incidents as requested and provides first aid to injured persons as required.
  • Required to use proper judgment and available resources to complete tasks under high stress and in potential danger of physical injury. May include but is not limited to incidents involving arresting person(s) for felony or misdemeanor crimes and proper use of varying levels of force, ranging from presence to lethal. May include being verbally abused or physically assaulted and dealing with emotionally traumatic events.
  • Required todetail, in report form, actions and observations related to investigations and other tasks performed at work. Must be able to recall the details of work related actions and testify to same.
  • Required to issue citationsas needed. May be required to testify to the content and details related to those documents.
  • Must be able to identify evidence and process it in accordance with instruction. When no instruction has been provided, must be able to apply standards and training to improvise an appropriate way to collect and process evidence.
  • Must be able to coordinate activities with supervisors, other officers, other agencies, other City departments and citizens as needed.
  • Must be able to act as a professional representative of the Dallas Police Department.
  • Performs duties in conformance with applicable federal, state, county and city laws and ordinances and adheres to department policies and procedures and the law enforcement code of ethics.
  1. Knowledge of modern law enforcement principle, procedures, techniques and equipment and court security procedures.
  2. Ability to learn self-defense techniques, how to properly apply prisoner restraints and prisoner control techniques relative to prisoner transport.
  3. Ability to learn the applicable laws, ordinances and department policy and procedures.
  4. Ability to perform work requiring good physical condition, meeting all required physical demands.
  5. Ability to communicate effectively in written as well as oral form.
  6. Ability to build and maintain effective working relationships with peers, subordinates, supervisors, and the general public.
  7. Ability to learn proper use of “Oleoresin Capsicum” (OC) spray and proper use of “Electronic Restraint Device” (ERD).
  8. Ability to follow written and verbal instruction.
  9. Ability to exercise sound judgment in evaluating situations and in making decisions

  2. Must have law enforcement or corrections experience; time as a reserve officer counts as law enforcement experience
  1. Must be 21 years of age or older at time of employment.
  2. Must possess, or be able to obtain by the time of employment, a valid Oregon driver license.
  3. Must not have a current or pending suspension of driving privileges in Oregon or any other state.
  4. Must not have been convicted in this state, or any other jurisdiction, of a crime designated under the law where the conviction occurred as being punishable as a felony or as a crime for which a maximum term of imprisonment of more than one (1) year may be imposed
  5. Must not have been convicted of violating any law involving the unlawful use, possession, delivery, or manufacture of a controlled substance, narcotic, or dangerous drug
  6. Must not have been convicted in this state of violating any law subject to denial or revocation as identified in OAR 259-008-0070 or has been convicted of violating the statutory counterpart of any of those offenses in any other jurisdiction.
  7. Must not have been convicted of any offenseinvolving any acts of domestic violence as defined in ORS 135.230
  8. Must be a U.S. citizen at the date of hire or, if not a citizen at the date of hire, within 18 months after the date of hire.
  9. Must be able to read and write the English language.
  10. Must be of good moral character, temperament and of industrious habits.
  11. Must be able to pass a police background, psychological assessment, and limited medical evaluation.
