JOB DESCRIPTION

Position Summary

Community Canvassers are the frontline organizers driving the mission of Badger Youth Organizing / Badger Youth Action in neighborhoods, at community events, and at civic gatherings across our target communities in Southeast, Western, and Northeastern Wisconsin. Canvassers lead direct, on-the-ground civic engagement efforts focused on empowering young people, especially communities of color, to vote and take action on the issues that matter most to them.

As a Canvasser, you'll be responsible for executing door-to-door canvassing strategies and staffing street team activities at festivals, civic holidays, and community gatherings to register voters, educate residents about key issues, and build a visible presence for the organization in the communities we serve. You'll also support key administrative duties, assist with event logistics, attend team meetings, and help maintain the organization’s digital presence to amplify civic content.

This role is for someone energized by talking to new people, passionate about civic power, and eager to turn everyday community spaces into sites of democratic participation. The strongest candidates will be bold, persistent, and deeply committed to meeting young people where they are, at their doors, and at the events they love.

Key Responsibilities

  • Direct Voter Contact (90%):
  • Conduct door-to-door canvassing in assigned community turf, including residential neighborhoods and apartment complexes, to reach young voters and prospective voters
  • Staff street team activities at civic holidays, cultural festivals, community fairs, and other public gatherings to engage residents on civic participation
  • Facilitate conversations that encourage community members to reflect on key issues (climate change, education, jobs, housing, etc.) and how elections directly impact their lives
  • Register community members to vote and ensure all voter registration forms are completed accurately
  • Educate voters with essential voting resources, including information on polling locations, registration deadlines, and ballot measures
  • Leverage community networks (local organizations, faith communities, neighborhood associations, etc.) to identify and pursue collaboration opportunities
  • Meet or exceed daily and weekly voter contact goals as set by the Organizing Director and/or the Regional Organizer
  • Administrative duties (10%)
  • Attend regular team meetings and strategy sessions (dates, times, and locations vary)
  • Ensure all voter registrations are filled out completely and accurately, and support with timely data entry into VAN or other designated tools
  • Assist with coordinating logistics for canvass launches, community events, and street team deployments
  • Support BYO/BYA’s social media presence on Instagram and TikTok by capturing content from canvassing and events in the field
  • Complete required trainings on voter registration compliance, canvassing best practices, and data management

A successful candidate for this job will:

  • Be comfortable approaching strangers and eager to have as many conversations as possible, even in challenging conditions
  • Have a passion for civic engagement and a genuine belief in young people's power to shape elections
  • Be scrappy, resilient, and able to stay motivated through repetitive fieldwork and variable weather conditions
  • Be a self-starter with strong time management skills and the ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously
  • Be excited to think creatively about how to connect with community members in authentic and compelling ways
  • Have reliable transportation or the ability to travel to assigned canvassing turf and event locations
