Job description

Position Overview

The Heavy Equipment Operator will operate heavy construction equipment such as motor graders, bulldozers, scrapers, compressors, pumps, derricks, shovels, tractors, or front‑end loaders to excavate, move, grade earth, erect structures, or pour hard‑surface pavement. The operator may also repair and maintain equipment.

Day in the Life

Operates heavy equipment of various sizes on site or highway construction, follows company and OSHA safety procedures, reports problems to project leadership, performs routine inspection and preventative maintenance, assists in training entry‑level employees, helps identify utilities before excavation, reviews trenching requirements, and communicates with management to avoid project impacts.

Responsibilities

  • Identify and report any utilities or potential hazards.
  • Accept and follow written and oral instructions from supervisors.
  • Assist training of entry‑level employees as needed.
  • Maintain adherence to safety procedures and company policies.
Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Six to twelve months of operating construction equipment experience (or equivalent education and experience).
  • Comprehensive knowledge of heavy equipment operating principles.
  • Ability to operate under diverse working conditions.
  • Working knowledge of hazards and safety precautions for heavy equipment.
  • OSHA10, First Aid/CPR certification, and completion of company safety training.
  • Ability to read and interpret grade stakes and site plans.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Capacity to apply basic math concepts.
  • Dependable attendance and schedule compliance.
  • Willingness to travel as needed.
  • Minimum age 18.
  • Union affiliation or willingness to join the union.
  • Ability to work 8‑12 hour shifts Monday‑Friday, including occasional weekends, evenings, and flexible hours.
Physical Demands

Manual work requiring extensive physical exertion, lifting or moving up to 50 pounds, being stationary for long periods, bending, stooping, kneeling, exposure to varied weather conditions.

Work Environment

Exposure to environmental conditions near heavy machinery, loud noises, variable weather and terrain.
