RPM Utilities, LLC is seeking an experienced Backhoe Operator to join our utility construction team. This position is responsible for safely and efficiently operating a backhoe and other heavy equipment to support underground utility installation, excavation, trenching, backfilling, and site preparation.
The ideal candidate has experience working around underground utilities, conduit, electrical, telecommunications, and utility crews and understands the importance of safe excavation practices.
Responsibilities
- Safely operate a backhoe for excavation, trenching, backfilling, grading, and material handling.
- Excavate around existing underground utilities while maintaining required clearances and safety precautions.
- Assist with the installation of underground electrical conduit, telecommunications conduit, duct banks, and other dry utility systems .
- Dig trenches, utility crossings, vault locations, and other excavations according to project specifications.
- Load, move, and place dirt, rock, aggregate, and other construction materials.
- Perform backfilling and rough grading following utility installation.
- Work closely with Foremen, Laborers, Pipe Layers, Operators, and other crew members.
- Follow utility markings, excavation limits, plans, and Foreman instructions.
- Perform daily equipment inspections and report maintenance or safety concerns.
- Maintain equipment in clean and safe operating condition.
- Follow OSHA requirements, company safety procedures, and project-specific safety rules.
- Maintain awareness of employees, equipment, existing utilities, structures, and other hazards within the work area.
- Assist the crew with general construction duties when equipment operation is not required.
- Perform additional duties as assigned by the Foreman or Superintendent.
Qualifications
- Previous experience operating a backhoe in underground utility or civil construction required.
- Experience with electrical conduit, telecommunications, dry utilities, or similar underground utility construction preferred.
- Ability to safely excavate around existing underground utilities.
- Knowledge of trenching, excavation, backfilling, and grading procedures.
- Ability to understand utility markings and basic construction plans.
- Strong understanding of jobsite and heavy-equipment safety.
- Ability to work effectively as part of a construction crew.
- Must be dependable and able to maintain consistent attendance.
- Must be able to work outdoors in varying weather and jobsite conditions.
- Must be able to pass all required pre-employment screening.
