American Track recognizes that earthwork is a vital part of almost all railroad construction projects. With our equipment and expertise, we offer a broad range of earthwork services, and our backhoe operators are at the heart of our operations. The backhoe operator is an hourly-rated skilled craft position that works on construction and maintenance projects and performs various duties. The applicant will be trained on and operate specialty railroad machinery, including a Tamper machine and Ballast Regulator. The position involves working as a backhoe operator and on-track machines, with some travel and weekend work expected. Job Responsibilities
  1. Operate all machinery safely.
  2. Set up heavy construction equipment.
  3. At least 1+ years of experience operating a backhoe, preferably in a railroad construction environment.
  4. Perform proper pre-start and daily maintenance, including lubrication and documentation.
  5. Keep equipment clean and well-maintained.
  6. Operate equipment to grade or redistribute earth.
  7. Operate equipment to move, load, or unload material.
  8. Install equipment or attachments on machinery.
  9. Signal directions or warnings to coworkers.
  10. Coordinate machine actions with other activities, responding to signals from crew members.
  11. Locate underground services before beginning work.
  12. Study instructions, plans, and diagrams to establish work requirements.
  13. Meet grade plan requirements and set grade standards.
  14. Demonstrate leadership by guiding a crew and delegating work.
  15. Understand production and quantity requirements.
  16. Make decisions based on standards.
  17. Perform incidental work, including operating on-track machinery.
  18. Assist crews with labor as needed.
  19. Be willing to be trained and train others on machinery.
Education and Experience

Minimum one year of experience as a backhoe operator, high school diploma or GED preferred. Must understand work directions and communicate effectively. Valid driver’s license required.

Physical Demands
  • Constant physical effort, including standing for extended periods.
  • Work with hands overhead and use power tools.
  • Lift and carry at least 50 pounds regularly, up to 150 with assistance.
  • Stay alert to multiple activities on-site.
  • Walk on uneven surfaces in various weather conditions.
  • Safely climb on and off heavy equipment.
